No one is asking Lucid to release the SW before it is ready. Presumably, the UX3.0 Air SW has been in validation for some time. Lucid should know either it will be ready soon or it is still month away from completing validation. Given the sad state of affairs in Lucid's SW robustness, a little more insight into where they are at in their validation process would only help Lucid to build credibility with their customers.
Even after UX3 for the Air is released, Lucid still has to support UX2 on CCCV1 hardware, which is anemic and likely to have its own bugs. In other words, there will be ongoing support costs related to the residual CCCV1/UX2 Airs.
Let's do the math:
> allegedly, Air from model year 2024 onward already has CCCv2 HW, correct?
> from Lucid's inception to end of Y2023, Lucid manufactured ~15kU of Air vehicles. Some portion of this 15,000 were model year 2024 Airs, which had the CCCV2 already installed, correct? Hence, there are probably 12,000 units (or less) of Gen1 Airs that needs the CCCV2 upgrade.
> if you "dollarize" the cost to upgrade these 12,000 units with CCCV1 hardware @$950/car, it comes to $11.4M. Some of them were already upgraded. I'd guess the cost to be ~$10M or less, everyone pays the $950/unit asked for by Lucid.
> So, $10M is still a consequential sum of money, that was about how much they paid Timothee Chalamet.
> but this $10M is what Lucid charges to do the upgrade. Perhaps just swapping out the CCCV1 box for the CCCV2 box actually cost only 1/2 of that, or $5M.
> so, for something between $5M-$10M, Lucid can transition all the pre MY2024 Airs to CCCV2, make the Air computing platform more robust, and eliminate the on-going support costs and aggravation of UX2 SW.
Has Lucid done the math and find a better, faster way to transition the entire Air products to CCCV2/UX3?
I know Lucid is not flush with money nowadays. But carrying the CCCV1 burden ad devoting SW support is not exactly free. It seems like the wrong answer. Just bite the bullet and force a mandatory transition to CCCV2 HW by making it free or 50% off a limited time or whatever.
Yes, they also have a Service Center workload problem. But if upgrade this is limited to a narrow scope of just swapping out the CCCV1 box to CCCV2, perhaps they can get a contractor to do this.
