Hello everyone. Our family owns one of the first Air from 2022. The compressor has went on the fritz and we are told that the compressor that was used in the car was a problem and now the company is using a different unit. The service center gave us a price of over $5500 for the work which includes the new model compressor, all parts for the conversion and the added labor to do this conversion. Has anyone come across this problem? Since the car is out of warranty, they are expecting me to pay for the complete conversion plus the parts. Maybe I’m wrong, but I proposed I should be responsible for the cost of the compressor if the original was still available and the labor to put in an original part. Any conversion parts and any EXTRA labor for the conversion should be picked up by the company. We would appreciate any input. Thanks everyone.

I feel for you, but don't hold out much hope that Lucid will see things your way. I hope they'll make some sort of accommodation as I am in the same boat with a '23 Touring.

No. My car is fine. TODAY. But I expect to keep my car for at least another 5-7 years, so the odds of mine crapping out at some point are probably pretty high.

Ahh, got it. That’s been my plan with a ‘23 air as well. This is where non OEM repair is needed. $5500 for an AC compressor is ridiculous. And that’s an item I would expect to not fail at all. I have cars over 20 years old with a completely original and functional AC system.
 
Thanks for this post, I wasn’t sure if they would use the updated ac compressor when they replace the old one and if it was even possible. Now I have my answer!

Thread 'AC compressor failure'

Hey forum friends!

I just wanted to make other owners aware of the possibility of an AC compressor failure I just experienced with my car. For me, at least, it caused the vehicle to completely shut down, so hopefully this can help others avoid the same situation. I haven't heard of any others having this issue, so it's possible that mine is just an extreme or isolated case.

The failure occurred while I was driving out to California with multiple DC charging sessions and warm weather (95-100F). I first noticed weak charging performance on my 2nd and 3rd charging stops when temperatures...

For that I price, I would hope that the conversion includes the heat pump. For those of us living further up north, that might actually make the cost seem reasonable. If that's the case, I wonder if it's possible to pay for a conversion even if your current compressor is working

Yes the conversion is the heat pump.
 
I think the new compressor could be the same as Gravity and 2026 Air, which is quieter and more powerful.

Unless something has changed since my was replaced I highly doubt this. Attached is the the parts list from when my AC compressor failed. No mention of heat pump parts and noise/performance is the same as before.

$5k or more just to have a little more winter efficiency does not seem worth it at all to me. These cars have more than enough range even in winter and the resistive heating performance is adequate, IMO.
 
OUCH! So what year's have the 'old' compressor anyway? Do I now need to worry about this happening with my 2023 in the future? My build date is April 2023 if I remember correctly. So far I have no issues BUT my car has less than one year of bumper to bumper warranty remaining since I purchased July 7 2023

In 2026 they started using the Gravity's stronger more powerful compressor.

He described that they said it would be a conversion, not a replacement. Yours was just a replacement.

Then I think they're mistaken or misspoke, as I'm pretty sure there is no conversion or retrofit offered for older Airs without the heat pump.
