14-50 outlet in New York

A friend of mine lives in New York (actually Long Island) and says that his electrician says he can’t get a 14-50 outlet as it violates code. He needs to buy the full charger. Can that be true? Is he being screwed by an electrician?

I have a 14-50 in Georgia and have no issues.

That’s what I told my friend that he should do but he said the electrician said it’s against code to use a 14-50 to charge the car and that he needed to buy/install the full home charging station which is way more expensive than just the 14-50 outlet I have. Seems he got ripped off but he doesn’t believe it.

It could be that local code requires GFCI circuit breaker protection on 14-50 outlets as mandated by the 2020 National Electrical Code. EV charging stations can't be fed by a GFCI breaker - it will trip. If so, the charging station must be hardwired instead. Hardwired circuits do not require a GFCI breaker. It's not a big deal and should not make much difference in cost.
