Sorry, I didn't check back until today. Don't remember where I read about the Pixel 6 troubles when used as a mobile key, but it was an issue as it never worked for me. I solved the problem by moving to the Pixel 9 XL Pro. It works as a mobile key and I no longer carry the fob.

Images show vent/airflow settings before during and after defroster is engaged. When disengaged, the airflow is still directed to the windshield. Those icons remain highlighted , even though the fan speed drops.It should return to the prior settings. Hope that adds to the clarity of the issue.
