I was at Sam’s Club this evening when someone came up to me and asked, “What car is that? Who makes it?” They said it looked really cool and wanted to know more about it.

So, naturally, I went into full Lucid-owner mode. 😂

I talked about how great the ride is, how good the interior feels, how advanced the technology is, and how much I enjoy the car. We probably talked for 10 minutes, and then I asked if they wanted to see it. They were excited, so we started walking toward the car.

And then… Lucid decided to humble me. 😂

I use my phone as the key. I got to the car, expecting it to unlock automatically.

Nothing.

Okay… I thought. Phone key can be finicky sometimes. So I took my phone out of my pocket, unlocked it, and tried again.

Nothing.

I opened the Lucid app.

The app decided it didn't want to participate either.

Now I'm standing next to the car, trying to unlock it while the person who just listened to me spend 10 minutes explaining how amazing this car is is standing there watching me fight with it. 😂

At that point, I literally had to tell them, “Yeah… sometimes it's a little finicky.”

The funny part is, I had just been praising this car for 10 minutes, and now I felt like I had to explain why I couldn't even get the damn doors unlocked.

Honestly, I felt embarrassed.

And it made me stop and think: How is it that after more than four years, we are still dealing with something as basic as reliably locking and unlocking the car?

I love the Lucid Air. I still think it's an incredible car to drive. The ride, interior, power and overall engineering are fantastic.

But none of that matters in that moment when you're standing next to your car doing the “please unlock” dance in front of someone who is considering the brand.

So I'm done being the unofficial Lucid salesperson. 😂

From now on, if someone asks me about the car, my answer is going to be:

“Lucid makes it. They're based in Arizona. It's a great car.”

And that's it.

@Lucid — if you still care about the Air and the customers who bought it, please fix this damn lock/unlock situation.Or, if this is a hardware limitation that you genuinely can't fix, just acknowledge it.

It's been more than four years. We shouldn't still have to dance around a $70K+ car trying to convince it to unlock.

Best damn car to drive. Sometimes one of the most frustrating cars to simply get into.

Sorry to hear that. I always carried the fob when it was rainy, etc and I needed to be sure I'd be able to gain entry quickly.
In this case, those pesky admirers caught you unprepared.

Sad, but true!

It happens to me every single day!

Is Lucid a great DRIVING CAR? YES!

Would I buy another Lucid given my experience? NO!

It gets REALLY OLD when you have to struggle to get into your car every single day!

Lucid needs to focus on the FUNDAMENTALS!

Wait until you get the drive system fault error after your warranty ends, and then tell me how much you want to recommend the vehicle. I've driven the air for over 2 years, have the exact same experience as @BS8899.

I'm genuinely curious if 2025 and newer air models are better.

Isn't the powertrain warranty 8 years / 100K miles?

Should be. If you wanna drive an Audi A5 for 2 months as a rental. Point being, it's just not that reliable, I've seen way too many on here and when I got it, I was genuinely concerned.

I've owned my Air Touring for aproaching 4 years. Total shop time is 4 weeks and that is because of the most recent sevice visit backlog. I've never had my Air strand me and when it needed an HV battery Lucid called me to schedule replacement because the car had phoned home. On the whole its spent a lot less time in the shop than my previous two cars... Audi A6 and Alfa Guilia. So for me it's been very reliable.

Your experience is so on point. Lucid sent me a survey a few days ago asking if I'd recommend their products to friends/family, and I had to say no precisely because of this kind of thing. This brand is not for "the normals" yet, but damn if it isn't the best car I've ever owned.

Unfortunately, and I say this as someone who still really loves the car, my 2025 AT has stranded me twice now in my first 18 months.

First was in the middle of a road trip, 2000 miles from home, at midnight in a snow storm on an interstate highway. Drive system failure.

Then just this past week, a parking brake failure, thankfully only 2 miles from home. I'm still waiting for information on the transport to the Houston SC (4.5hrs away) and hopefully information on a loaner.

Let's just say I really hope my issues are uncommon and that I'm just unlucky enough to experience them and that it's not going to be common for Lucid's vehicles to strand their owners so often.

Though I will say roadside assistance has been mostly good.

The phone unlock is the only annoyance I have about the car. Equally annoying is its hurry to re-lock in the time it takes me to get out of the drivers seat walk around the rear of the car and get to my kid in the car seat in the passenger rear. My dad was with me the other day when that happened and he was stunned the car would auto lock that quickly with a child in the back. I told him it happens literally every day and I can usually get in with 5-15 seconds. It’s still unnerving.

I feel like if this were a software fix it would have happened already. Short of using the fob, we’re stuck being embarrassed in public.

… so what you’re saying is nobody has gotten the drive system warning out of warranty, and that experience hasn’t happened to you?

Also, this has nothing to do with phone key / unlocking, which is what this post is about.

I mean...

(but seriously, I know the reliability concerns for those cars are a bit overblown...but as a casual reading that, it's not the praise you think it is ;) )

Side note: I've been having more locking/unlocking delays in the past 2-3 weeks. I never had an issue before. there obviously hasn't been an update, to the car or my phone. Maybe an update to the app? no clue. I see the last update was on august 7th so maybe it's conking out since that update

I would buy another Lucid, nothing else out there that is comparable…..though frustrating when door opening is delayed a few seconds, not a reason not to experience the other amazing virtues.

In 3.5 years, my Air I never had a problem unlocking with the fob, and it never required an unscheduled service.
Just my own data point which I feel compelled to repeat, as those few whose cars had a severe problem feel compelled to repeat theirs.

Coming here to confirm your car functions well is welcome, yet I am unsure why you must take on others. Yes, we must repeat this because the issue was neither fixed nor addressed. I am glad your car performs well, and we expect the same for ours, which is not unreasonable.

Well the Guilia was an incredible car that was simultaneously a total train wreck. Fortunately I bought the extended warranty because everything that could go wrong did haha. After the first two years of ownership it lived in the shop. However I did expect more from Audi TBH. Certainly much more reliable than the Alfa but iit had some issues it shouldn't have.

The Lucid Air remains my favorite car ever. The software has matured over time and it still has a bit to go. But on the whole its been relatively trouble free and I would give service 5 stars with the exception of the most recent service as the first available appointment was two months out and then another 3 weeks in service. The service experience itself was great beyond the extended time frame. I do have confidence they will course correct on service however.

While all you say is true it is also true that a large number of,apparently, quiet people don’t have those problems. Hence a simple reminder.
And we need to consider that spending time taking on “influencers“, or short sellers are part of protecting the company so they can get on to address the real problems some are experiencing.

Had an interaction Friday at an EA charger. Older gentleman knocked on my window so I hopped out and we started talking about the car. I mirror the same sentiment as a lot of you, amazing car. In 51 years of age, this car is the single most amazing vehicle i've driven. Ever. Handling, smoothness, silence, space, speed, ALL OF IT amazing. Sat and talked to him for the entire charge session about everything we love about the car.

The unlocking is the literal SINGLE most infuriating problem with the AIr. With ONE caveat - I refuse to carry the Fob. I hate that. The fact my phone is able to unlock means it should reliably unlock at all times. However, I know I am hurting my own mental health by not just having the damn thing with me. It's in service now for half shaft and normal service bulletins, great service team in Scottsdale, super friendly and always helpful.

So after 3 years of owning this car, I found something that has helped me immensely with the car failing to unlock promptly. If I walk up to the car and it still hasn't opened, I depress the door handle of the passenger door. It seems to me that this sends a signal to "wake up: at which point it connects to your Bluetooth and opens up. It doesn't seem to work as well with the driver's door but that maybe a an issue for the SC to look at the next time it goes in.

Overall, unlocking does seem to work better than in the past. In fact, I now regularly get the autolock/unlock disabled warning because the car now detects the phone from a further distance than previously. Gotta take the good with the bad I guess 🤷

Yep! I wonder if most aren't aware of that, so small delays become big ones.
