US carmakers should be terrified, including Lucid

I got the chance to experience several Chinese EV's when I Was over there last year.,
There are different price points with different quality just as there is in the rest of the world.
That said...
If you go with the nicer stuff, eg Nio, Zeekr, they are offering a lot more vehicle at the same price as a Model Y and that's *after* you adjust the price upwards to what they would likely cost here. In terms of initial quality, ie things like materials, door slam tests and features and performance they appear to be superior to Tesla.
Certainly I would be interested in leasing one (most likely a Zeekr station wagon) if they were available. My only concern is not enough data on longevity vs say a Tesla, hence the lease. In terms of customer service Nio are prioritizing that (can't speak for Zeekr) and am confident they would take care of me.
Yes the cars charge much faster than anything we have, but that is due to chemistry as much as cooling and consequently the range isn't as good, it's all about trade-offs.

I couldn't care less where my car is made, and frankly neither does the average person. Sure they say one thing, but will buy whatever is the better deal. Affordability is becoming a real problem for new car buyers in the USA, given I don't see how car prices could come down, and nor do I see pay going up, the reality is more and more people will be out of the new car market unless cheaper cars come along, and the US makers and their share prices are not positioned to be able to do that. So expect Chinese made EV's at some point.

I don't wish to get into politics, I'll just say as a US citizen who was brought up in the UK, and having been to China and other countries over the past decades... all. governments are problematic, all countries have their pros and cons. There really isn't much difference. There is propaganda everywhere being constantly re-inforced all designed to instill nationalism and create division.
In the US, we have a real probelm coming and putting in blocks to competition to try and protect home grown companies from competition has never worked. Evernually those blocks get removed and the complacency and greed that they enabled results in those companies going out of business. What we should be doing right now is using the breathing room from tariffs to get our manufacturing efficiency up, and raw matgerial extraction moving so that we're ready when the walls fall. But we're not. Instead the domestics are keeping prices high, business as usual manufacturing and fat profits. Which is what every other industry has done in the same situation... The writing is on the wall and we're just laughing at it because we think it will never happen. Frogs in rapidly heating water is what we truly are...

Greed is the root of all evil. Your prediction on your last sentence may indeed come true but due to the cause you seem to invite.

Can we please stick with EV discussions? Things are starting to get off topic.

The NIO ET9 fully active electrical suspension seems incredible - I’m imagining ultra smooth rides on our bumpy highways! I wonder what the Lucid engineers think of that.
Its based on Bose system that works the same principle as noise cancelling headset. It is not new technology and I do question the longevity and reliability of the system since its not used after initial development.

Not terrified, as would never, ever buy a Chinese car.
Having spent some time in China recently, and a lot of time in Chinese cars, I am totally impressed by them. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if they vacant available in the US.

Nice - I would still never want one and never want to see them sold in the US. Absolutely no way. 🙂

Here in UAE there are lots of Chinese cars.

While they are ok for the price, a lot of them has false advertisement, for example, a 300hp engine + 300hp motor hybrid where only 1 power can be engaged at a time is advertised as 600hp. Range not up to advertised. Big Range Rover look alike SUV with payload of a Nissan Sunny etc.

Not quite 14 years ago, a new U.S. auto company that designed and built its cars in the U.S. seized the global lead in EVs with the advent of the Tesla Model S, stealing a march on Nissan's Leaf and Toyota's Prius (a hybrid) and putting GM's early efforts to shame. It looked like the dawning of a bright new era for the U.S. auto industry and its engineering and manufacturing. Barely a decade later this company was producing the best-selling car in the world.

And where are we today? Destroying that lead just as quickly as it was built with an erratic, unstable, antagonistic entrepreneur unhindered by a compliant Board interested only in their personal gain and electing a government intent on reversing any moves toward electric transportation and alternate energy, thereby openly and proudly surrendering the lead to China and other countries.

It's the saddest spectacle I've seen in my many decades of following the auto industry. When something similar happened in the 1970's with the arrival of Japanese cars on our shores, we at least fought back, even if clumsily for a while. This time we're gleefully putting a torch to our technology future and looking to throw new logs on the bonfire every day.
Greed at its finest. US can go to hell but I want my trillions and power!

I was blown away by these Chinese EV’s.

Lucid’s real competition is Chinese EV’s. All US car makers should be terrified. Didn’t we learn from the 1980’s when Japan dominated the global auto market? History is now repeating itself with the Chinese.
Reliability, safety, handling, performance. I bet you two of these are missing in every Chinese car.

Shiny on the outside!

I am impressed with the battery tech and charging speeds I've seen recently from China - it was damn close to filling a gas car

Gravity 400kw charging plus the efficiency, you are not far off from this as milage gain per min of charging.
Also, those demo charger that provided 1000kw charging has a "power bank" attached to it as the inverter cannot provide enough power.

You cannot compare that to gravity :) maybe with the US where no chargers are available which wäre beyond 400kw. But in Germany it's possible already :)

yeah, as much as I've seen other manufacturers stick with 400V architectures, I think Lucid made the right call with going for higher voltages. It'll help keep Lucid competitive outside the US. And eventually, I wouldn't be surprised if the US eventually implements more chargers that take advantage of higher voltages. Good to have that future-proofing

Every charging provider in the USA has been only installing 920+ volt DCFC for years, except for Tesla.

Ah, thanks for clarifying that. I've been under the assumption that Tesla remained as the go-to specs when thinking of charging in North America. I think it'll change even more when Chinese EVs will be sold in Canada, as even BYD will be bringing their flash chargers over.

While Tesla currently operates almost exactly half of the DC fast charging plugs in the USA, they have only 20% of the total number of sites (locations).

Wait Tesla is only at 20%? Damn, I need to catch up on my reading, I've clearly been missing out!

It's because they tend to have more outlets per site.

And that other networks have been doing a lot of expansion to catch up in recent years. It pretty much used to be Tesla and EA (plus some scattered small ones). Ionna, Mercedes-Benz, and Walmart didn't even exist a few years ago. Now they're arguably BETTER than Superchargers in most ways (other than coverage). And growing fast.
