Lucid Winter Wheel Package

Anyone getting ready for snow season? We really need a 20"/21" wheel option with appropriate curated tires for dedicated snow driving. Michelin CrossClimate2 would be ideal. Can we purchase just the wheels as an option? I like the curated option better as it has all sensors and potentially mobile service can initially install.
 
Your best bet for true winter driving is going to be 19" wheels and a dedicated snow tire like Michelin Ice-X snow. I had the Michelin CrossClimate2 on my previous car, while it's very good in the snow, it's not as good a dedicated winter tire. It all depends on where you live and how much snow and ice you get. The other benefit of 19" wheels in the winter is more sidewall to protect the wheel and car from the inevitable hidden pot hole.

I love the 19" Pirelli Sottozero winter wheel package I got from the Lucid Store. [Here.]
I'm in the Cascade & Coast mountains frequently here, two winters now on these wheels.
Lucid mobile service swaps them out seasonally in my driveway for a very modest charge.

Now…everyone talking about 19” wheel, who said Gravity brakes will clear those? I am not aware of anyone testing that theory yet.

I imagine a wheel and tire shop would be willing to do the experiment, for no charge if they can't make it fit. Presumably different 19" wheel designs might have different internal clearance for brakes. One might have to be selective about which 19" wheel is chosen?

If you have a spare of 19s you can definitely try them out, or even measure clearance on the 20/21. The rear is a 2 piece with the electronic parking brake and it’s not obvious a 20” would fit before we toss a 19” in.

If Lucid is too slow on the winter package I have no issues throwing a square 20” on it.
 
I would think we still need to follow the 20"/21" wheel size - keep the outer diameter the same.

We bump the tire profile to keep diameter the same, 285 45 21 moves to 285 50 20

I wouldn't not play around with wheel sizing. You do not want to play with EPB clearance, especially once you start getting snow

Double negatives make your post confusing.

I don’t see the EPB being any larger than the 4 piston caliper in the rear.

Obviously both would have to fit a 20” wheel to work, and Lucid was nice enough to include 2 in the front so people can test, for those with small wheels.

I currently have the 22/23” on order so I will probably not be the first to try, unless I get some adapters and decide to throw my existing wheels on for fun, they just don’t have the proper weight rating for actual driving.
 
I'm not smart enough to edit the post but small front wheels do not have enough clearance for the EPB. I wouldn't put them on the rear you risk damaging the epb.

You measured, you tested? Where is the data coming from?

Huh, I put Nokian WRG5 Remedy all weather (not All Season) 19” on my Air GT and while the grip is remarkable in bad weather, the efficiency sucks. It’s been great in New England, put 7k miles on them with literally almost no noticeable wear and I drove them in snow without the slightest loss of grip, so they are really remarkable tires but I lost at least 0.5 mi/kwh efficiency on them so you’re looking at a range hit of 60 miles or more.

My current config has 22/23” summer tires. If I swap that for equal size winter tire, that would probably be worse than 20/21?

So in essence the 20/21 is the most efficient winter combo, which is where I was going.

Obviously the stock 20/21 efficiency tires would be better but I would also have less grip.

Yeah I’m only comparing based on the Air. The Gravity has a smaller efficiency difference between tire sizes, so true winters or all weathers make more sense for Gravity than for Air. I’ll be curious to see how the grip is on the Hankooks when I get the Gravity DE, as they’re basically the lowest rolling resistance ones out there and as another post showed the wet stopping distance isn’t so great. However the Air’s traction control is so amazingly good that I think even with lowest rolling resistance tires, you’ll have great control in every situation except straight line 50mph to 0 stop distance in the rain.

Going to find out eventually as I do prefer to have a dedicated set of winter shoes, plus not many all season options for the 22/23, technically one option on TireRack for oem tire and nothing else.

Never stopped me before so I will definitely explore. Probably will take a few months to make sure it’s not a Lemon before I start making changes like tint, detector, laser jammer, wheel swaps.
