Rivian R2 doesn’t have FM/HD radio

I find it mind boggling that Rivian pulled FM/HD radio from the R2. I wonder what the "savings" was? Without an internet connection and media stored locally on your phone, you are SOL. I wonder how far along congress is on mandating AM radio? Please Lucid, do not do this for Cosmos/Midsize!!! They must be getting some revenue stream from the "free" partners that they offer without a paid Connect+ subscription.

For Lucid, I can see why they might think that the vehicles will mostly be driven on-road with cell service available. But Rivian's whole brand is about off-road adventure, where presumably cell service is frequently unavailable. It's a puzzling decision to skip the satellite antenna.

Agree - totally mind boggling they would pull FM/HD radio and then have no SiriusXM satellite service. What is wrong with some of these auto mfg’s? Do they think everyone lives in a city and that no one ever travels outside of cities? Just such dumb moves. That is ok though, as long as EV makers do that will just give another reason to keep their ICE cars. 🙂

Or buy an EV that does have FM radio and a Sirius XM antenna, like the EX60.
I imagine that some newer ICE cars will drop radio and satellite as well. No reason to think this would be limited to EVs.
 
They probably have numbers to justify the presumably smaller number of drivers listening to the radio

Maybe EV people that live in the city, but there is a much bigger market than that. Just stupid. Marketing/research just really bad sometimes.

Agree. Model S/X when produced had FM radio and Sirius XM antenna. Others still do too. Guessing BMW/Mercedes do too.

They just have no clue, even with streaming, I would rather listen to live real time FM/AM radio for Sports. There is no delay when doing that. Even when traveling I can pick up our local AM station with most of our local sports broadcasting at night many miles/states away.
 
Also no Lidar this year, and software missing quite a few features like … why would anyone buy this year unless desperate?

“The features missing at launch include Rivian Assistant, Climate Hold, and Pet Mode. Gear Guard will be present but with limited functionality. The SiriusXM app will not be available at launch, and neither will Google Casting or YouTube. And if you like camping, there’s no Camp Mode app either.”
 
I'm hoping there will be a larger battery pack available next year too.

Not defending them (I do listen to FM radio myself), but don't forget they know whether RS1 and RT1 drivers use radio or not as they collect the data. They probably based their decision on that.

i guess no drive in listening on radio as well. Although I hear that there is a processing delay on R1FM radio that makes it impossible to use at a drive in
 
I was just at a Rivian event and sat in the production R2. I was changing channels to listen to different local FM radio stations. It appeared to me to have FM radio. Can't speak on whether it was HD or not as I did not pay attention for that.

I just looked it up and it said that it doesn't have the hardware to tune FM radio. Local stations can be streamed using Connect +

Thanks for the clarification. I just saw an FM dial and a list of available channels (all local) and just assumed it was real FM. Not a fan of needing to pay a subscription to listen to free radio stations. Guess I'm falling behind the times in how I view things related to pay to play.
