New software update for Gravity - 3.5

It took them 4 days to communicate this, when they said it was rolling out last Thursday at the Investor Conference? They would’ve been better off not saying anything. It doesn’t inspire confidence if you’re an investor in terms of delivering on the plan, and on time.
"Not saying anything" made everyone unhappy because there was no communication. So they started saying things. Now they'd have been better off saying nothing?

Everyone agrees they'd love it if they had shipped it sooner, or more importantly, on time. They have now communicated, within one business day (two, if you count Friday, since it was not supposed to be released Thursday), that it is delayed due to unforeseen bugs that apparently cropped up. They are fixing those in order to get it out as soon as possible, because that is the far better response than releasing it in a buggy state.

Honestly, I just don't know what Lucid could do to please some of you, other than never make a mistake. I'm not belittling anyone, and everyone is entitled to feel how they feel. Do not take this as admonishment, bullying, or whatever else you may read it as. It is none of those things.

it is much simpler than that: I just genuinely do not understand. Which is fine, I guess.

Maybe I’m mis-remembering the Lucid Investor Conference I watched live last Thursday morning for four hours, but I believe Mark Winterhoff announced the next software update with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto was “rolling out today”, not Friday. He was clearly trying to convey progress and put a “win” on the board to impress his investor audience, which I think was great. It certainly got me excited. So, I would’ve expected at least a few people to get it Thursday. I don’t recall him saying it was rolling out to Beta testers either.

The point is, if you’re the CEO of Lucid and you say it, it needs to happen. If you announce it at your investor conference, you make darn sure it’s debugged and ready to go, especially with all the previous software issues. Otherwise, you play it safe and say “hopefully, it’s rolling out later this month.” I like Mark, but it’s this kind of stuff that explains why he’s still “interim” CEO.

You're not wrong, and your opinion is valuable. That said, I hope we can move past this back-and-forth discussion about what they should've done. This thread is supposed to be about the 3.5 software update, which literally isn't in any cars yet, and yet the discussion has exploded to nine pages.

Some feel that Lucid did us a disservice by announcing an update before it was 100% ready to distribute, and I share that feeling. That said, I don't mind waiting an extra week or two if that's what it takes for the software to be safer, more robust, and bug-free. The fact that they are vetting the software for edge case issues/bugs/problems is a good thing, not a bad one. I think we all need to take a breath, take a step back, and count our blessings that we are lucky enough to even own such a car, even if it doesn't have CarPlay or Android Auto just yet.

I agree with you here. Big whoop. They found a bug or two before mass releasing it. Would you rather it be a good update or an annoying one? Some of you people are insufferable.

That’s possible; I didn’t watch the webcast.

I was referring to the email / press release, which said Friday. But point taken; he may indeed have said that.

Aside from that, I agree that it’s not a good look. Where I disagree is that by communicating, they’ve somehow messed up. The issue is the delay, not the communication.

That’s my point. It sounds like they had every intention of getting it out Friday (or Thursday, based on what you said, perhaps). It also sounds like they found some last-minute issues that they had to fix. 2 business days later, they communicated about the delay.

None of that is bad. Only the delay is the issue.

I hope that clarifies the point I have been trying to make.

Well said. I agree more bugs is worse than being a few days late. If it’s rock solid no one will remember it was delayed.

Plausible scenario:
  1. All signals show “go.” Internal testing passed. Make the release announcement.
  2. Start rollout on Thursday, as announced, to a very limited audience. Possibly early testers with special relationships to Lucid with a direct feedback channel. Monitor telemetry closely. Staged rollouts is a best practice within the software industry.
  3. While waiting for a “go” signal from the initial test group to continue the rollout on Friday, someone raises an alarm.
  4. No one knows whether the problem is serious enough to stop the release. Mad scramble by the software team to start investigating the problem. No announcement is made, because there is not enough information to make a plan, let alone announce it.
  5. Software team works on the weekend. Can we let the bug pass? Can we make a quick fix?
  6. On Monday, execs want answers. They know Lucid’s reputation is on the line. They need to make a call. By the end of the day, the software team decides the release needs to be halted.
  7. Announcement made by the end of the business day.
It’s easy to be an armchair quarterback for those who have never coached in their life. It’s easy to yell, “that was such a stupid pass, you shouldn’t have thrown that interception.“ As much as we complain on the sidelines, nobody feels worse than the actual players in the game.

This is what I had in mind too as a software developer. However I hope they learned to either do announcements after 3 is a go OR announce with more buffer room ie the simple under promise and over deliver.

No big deal…..be grateful they are offering it!

I'd like to address multiple posts here, not gonna quote them all, which all talk about "a little delay" and "extra few days" or "a couple of weeks", and also posts, advising Lucid "it's better to be vague and not give dates...". Ladies and gentlemen, Lucid is not going to be late "a few days" or even "a couple of weeks" - they are going to be late (hopefully) just few days or a couple of weeks from March 12th, but that is just their latest missed deadline. It is NOT the originally promised, communicated to customers and investors target release date for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - these features were advertised to be available AT LAUNCH, which was somewhere in the middle of last year. There are old Lucid press releases about that, which can be dug up, and other types of communication about that from Lucid in the past. Since then I personally heard excuses from Lucid CS and other Lucid officials why it's getting delayed, and heard "around Thanksgiving" as a new target release timeframe, then I heard "December 2025", then "January 2026", then "Q1 2026". It makes no sense to say "a little late" or "a couple of weeks late" - they are late BY ABOUT TEN MONTHS. And that is only true if you start counting from the time the actual vehicle was released. If you take into account the delay in release of Gravity itself then the time between originally communicated Gravity release time and release of these features will probably be around 1.5 years.

Let's say for whatever reason Lucid doesn't fix whatever is wrong with v3.5 soon, and it takes another 2 months until the update with these features is released. Let's also say they're gonna say in another press release "May 15 release date" and then they actually deliver on May 17 - are you actually going to say Lucid was late "just a couple of days"?... Is by how much they missed their latest communicated and then broken deadline how we calculate the delay? 🤔

As for the advice for Lucid to be vague - this March 12 was literally first ever concrete date they ever gave to consumers or investors, after failing to deliver those features with the vehicle nearly a year ago. 95% of the time I asked Lucid about it the answer was "soon" or "hopefully soon" or "we're just waiting on Google certification...", etc. and the remaining 5% of the time the generic timelines I gave in 1st paragraph were thrown out there. For a company that is THIS much late on a promised at launch feature, they could not have been more vague if they tried.

They probably only communicated a date now because they were afraid of potential class action, where Gravity owners would gang up on them for undelivered important feature. For some people, such as myself, Lucid's willingness to install and deliver CarPlay & AA was one of the key criteria for selecting their EV brand, and one of the main reasons for passing up on other EV brands like Rivian or Tesla, who refuse to include it.

Now they'd have been better off saying nothing?
No, they did exactly what they should have done. This should (it won't) end the "indignant delay comments" (which I also made) and let us focus on other things. I just didn't want to feel ignored and I am no longer being ignored. For me, that's a win for Lucid! Dream Ahead!

Me thinks it has something to do with the PaaK, because for the life of my I don't understand how they broke my fob so badly with 3.4.4 and the suddenly on Sat or Sun it started working perfectly again. I'm not complaining that my fob works again, but I just don't get how it literally shit the bed for a whole week and then suddenly was perfect again.

PAAK is not on the new update
You will be able to allow the car to drive with the app (by pressing a button) but it's not the same thing as approaching the car with your phone and driving off without doing anything. PAAK will be in a future update

Guess we both interpret it differently. This new function, to me, is the precursor to PaaK, just without the wireless handshake and authentication as you approach like the fob.

well if you're in the bottom level of a garage and can't get cell service you won't be able to use it to drive the car

which isn't to say, having it as option is better than not having it, especially if you have fob or center console issues and the extra option is better

btw, I don't see the Remote Start icon in the Android app, wonder if it's gonna be an IOS only feature 🤔
