2022 Lucid Air Grand Tour
My 2022 AGT has about 65k miles now. For the past... 6 months, maybe? the car has been failing to start charging _sometimes_ when plugged in. It started roughly when I got a software update, so I had figured it would eventually get fixed. It always seemed to restart immediately after failing without me having to do anything more. Until recently.

I got my car back from service at the end of last month, and the incidences of failing to start are now > 90%. It does not restart immediately/automatically. It sometimes seems to wait a few minutes and then try again, or try again when I open the app. Most of the time it fails to start repeatedly. It's becoming less and less frequent that it starts charging.

I've been using a Tesla Wall Charger Gen 2 with a Lectron 48A adapter ever since the car was new. I started experiencing that current drop problem people are reporting back in May, around the time everyone else did. I think that may also have been when I started getting the charging failure but can't specifically recall. I've pulled out the Lucid mobile charger from the trunk to see whether maybe something was wrong with my wall charger. It's not seeming promising at this point. It charged up to 80% a couple nights ago but I haven't been able to charge since then.

I've tried rebooting maybe a week ago (steering wheel buttons + break peddle), and charging did start after I did that an a few more failed attempts. It's charged maybe once more since then, but not it's stuck not charging.

My next step is going to be calling my service center since I know the mobile charger at 12A doesn't work. Has anyone else experienced this sort of persistent charging failure? Is there anything I should try?

I finally got my car in to the Natick service center for diagnostics. The problem is a failure of the Multifunction Power Box (MPB). It has to be replaced and will cost $5,706.22.

My car has 65k miles, so it's out of warranty. Such an expensive repair when the car is only just over 3 years old is pretty concerning. I've loved this car for most of the time I've owned it, but this is making me pretty unhappy right now.

I think the cost is in line with other 100k dollar car repairs. Have you not owned luxury vehicles before? It sucks, but the car was $130,000 dollar luxury EV with super car performance. It’s not exactly a 3 series.

Isn't the 100k warranty battery and drivetrain?
Powertrain Limited Warranty

The Powertrain is covered for the duration of 8 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever occurs first. The Powertrain Limited Warranty will cover the cost of repair, replacement, or adjustment of the defective parts of the Lucid powertrain subject to the limitations outlined in this New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This coverage is for Lucid’s sophisticated electric powertrain, including the fully integrated electric drive units, transmission, and differential.

Battery Limited Warranty

The high voltage battery is covered for the duration of 8 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever occurs first, with a minimum 70% retention of battery capacity over the warranty period. The Battery Warranty covers the cost of repair, replacement, or adjustment of a defective Lucid battery at the discretion of Lucid, subject to the limitations outlined in this New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

The MPB is neither battery nor powertrain.

I can't reply with the words I want to on this forum or I'll get banned. This is about the rudest reply I've seen on this forum. Go away, never speak to me again.

I was told the MPB is not considered part of the battery or drivetrain, so not covered by either warranty. I feel like the ability to charge the battery _should_ be considered part of the battery system and covered by its warrant, but alas that's not the case.

Relax!

This is normal. The parts don’t get cheaper just because the cars lose value. Thats what I meant.

Yeah, I hear ya. It sucks, but it is laid out fairly clearly (and the same for every EV I’ve seen) so it’s hard to feel “wronged” - it just still sucks!

I've been seeing this error for the past couple of weeks. With the frigid temperatures and "snowcrete" here I've been using my truck rather than the Lucid anyway, but I guess I should book it into Tysons and have them look at it. Grr.

@martinmeyer did your car still DC-charge while you were having this issue?

It did, but the situation seemed to be unstable. It wouldn’t L2 charge, but did charge at L3. After that, it L2 charged again a few times then stopped. So I don’t know if it was a fluke that L3 worked or if it would have kept working.

I think the SC told me that all charging goes through the MPB, so L3 would eventually have stopped working too. I still don’t know what exactly failed about it, only that the diagnostic codes returned were specific to an electronics failure in that component.

I know you're the guru here for everything lucid and i don't want to correct you...but this is pretty wrong. On my lightning, the charging components (onboard charger, etc.) are covered in the battery warranty. Also, the taycan i had ended up having an "extended warranty" (not sure why or if it was all taycans) for the on board charging components directly linked to the battery as well (i couldn't find the documentation for it; the dealership just told me this..thankfully i didn't need it!)

I’m glad your lightning warranty is written that way.

The Air one, by my read, isn’t. I’m not an attorney though, so someone else should read it too.

no I think you're right...i was just saying there is some extra coverage with others (had a taycan as well and it's written the same way as Lucid's)

Fair enough! Apparently I haven’t skimmed enough EV warranty documents :p

OK here's an interesting development. I've been using an extension cord to charge - not an ideal situation, I know, but I recently moved house and am waiting on electricians and architects and whatnot. Anyway. I'd had cause to switch out the extension cord so I could trickle-charge one of my ICE vehicles. And it struck me that it was at that point I started seeing this error.

So I switched back to the original extension cord, and now the Lucid is charging absolutely fine.

I'll keep an eye on it, and try it at a few different charging stations (including L3), but perhaps in my case the fault was not with the car at all?

That could be. Extension cords are amperage limited, based on the gauge wire inside. The run length also matters, as the wire has some innate resistance.
