What is it about EV brands that attract so many rabid (and toxic) fans?

Saw a post in a Lucid Facebook group from one of the admins of the group decrying the dangers of Tesla's FSD and using a head on collision from a few days ago as an example of how it kills people.

The problem? The Tesla driver in question was drunk and made a dangerous attempt to pass other cars, causing the head on collision. It had nothing to do with FSD, just yet another drunk driving idiot managing to kill other people. When that was pointed out he locked comments and banned people (including me) who had pointed out it had nothing to do with FSD but he's still commenting himself complaining about the "Tesla fanboys" disagreeing with him.

It just seems so weird how people make liking a brand their entire personality. I come from a tech background so I'm familiar with this phenomenon to some degree (Apple vs PC, etc) but for some reason EV brands seem to bring out some extremely toxic behavior from fanboys/haters alike. I'm told the guy in question doesn't even own a Lucid but I assume owns some stock because he's always adding weird hashtags about Lucid millionaires. Everything he posts seems to be just reposts of other people's pictures of their Lucids or news stories/social media posts about Lucid.

Yeah, I agree. Based on what’s been reported, this doesn’t seem related to FSD at all

Tribalism. For some reason, we have gotten away from critical thinking and the 'tiktok' attention span has taken over. It is much easier to find a group of people on the internet that agrees with you and 'supports' you, even if in real life you would likely not be able to stand being in the same room together (or maybe you'd be best friends; the point being that everyone online is wearing a mask).

I don't think this is limited to cars. As often as people here want to brand me a Lucid 'fanboi', I'm the first to say that if a great roadster comes out, I'm selling my Air and buying that instead - and Longbow is working on this. And when Lucid screws up, they screw up, like with the previous leasing nonsense.

I like Lucid, at the moment, because they produce the best cars (imho) and seem to genuinely care about doing better. But it's not like I am wed to Lucid lol - they're just cars!

Across the spectrum, people seem to find their 'brethren' in whatever topic they care about; the difference is they no longer see most of these people in person, and it's much easier to say things and be outlandish behind a keyboard, engaging in the dopamine crescendo of ragebait, than it is to say the same words to someone's face. Not in the least because if you piss them off too much they can punch you in yours, which tends to temper conversations.

I think a lot has been lost through communication becoming majority text and majority internet. People need to see other people. In person. That, I believe, is how you get past the tribalism.

Computers do their very best to remind us that they are not human; unfortunately, on the other end of the 'tube' is a real human, behind yet another computer, and we wield these pieces of metal as shields. I wish people wouldn't. My general rule is "If I wouldn't say it out loud in person, don't say it." I don't stand around a party with my friends handing out picture of various Lucids, so I also don't do the same on the internet.

I dno, maybe I'm just thinking out loud.

It was a drunk driver making a very bad pass on a two lane road, he just happened to be driving a Tesla.

One of the admins of the largest Lucid "owners" groups on Facebook isn't even a Lucid owner, he's just a fanboy and rabid anti-Tesla. He continually posts AI written slop about Lucid and Tesla, I still have no idea who in the admins of that group thinks it's a good idea he's an admin. I've been permanently banned now as a "tesla fanboy" for pointing out an error in a Gravity charging guide that said owners should avoid using Tesla Superchargers because the adapter we have to use makes charging slower and that Electrify America is the best, most reliable charging for a Gravity.

It's just sad because it's one of the groups that Lucid employees including Nick Twork post/comment in.
