Engineering Explained. This is bad.

Lucid did use Pektron for the Air, but switched suppliers for the Gravity. Someone here posted who the new company was, but I don't have the link anymore.

Well, as a potential owner, my wife and I are rethinking whether to follow-through with our order placed back in Sept.
Yes, and I still concur with Consumer Report's conclusion, don't buy first year model cars and first new model cars. Stuff just has to be sorted out and tests your patience.

Well, that means beating the Model S and Porsche Taycan, vehicles that both manufacturers have all but given up on. Besides, the real test is how they do against their ICE counterparts, not against other EVs.
Agreed. Luxury sedan EV is a very, very small market. Nice bragging point but will not keep Lucid afloat.

I had basically none of the problems this guy did. I had other ones, but not these. I also couldn’t care less about switching profiles in the car while using it, I mean is that a common thing?

Mercedes hasn't used that supplier since 2012.

Can you give a source for this?

I have read that, although Mercedes now sources fobs and entry systems from an array of Tier 1 suppliers, Marquardt is still a supplier to MB for key fobs and other components, sometimes directly and sometimes as a underlying supplier to a Tier 1 supplier.

Marquardt doesn't report revenues from specific client companies, but I found quite a smattering of references to Marquardt supplying Mercedes well after 2012. Here are a couple of examples:

Aa 2020 entry on the Mercedes Blog discussed the new C-Class, and it included this passage:

"For example, the premium sound system on C-Class is produced by the high-end audio specialist Burmester. Marquardt, a switching system specialist, produces all locking systems for the model series."

A 2015 article reporting on the car industry in India contained this passage concerning Marquardt:

"It [Marquardt] is a 100 percent supplier to all Mercedes-Benz and Audi cars, which currently use keyless-go systems, and also to a number of models of BMW, Mini and Chrysler cars for specific features."

I've been ruminating over the video since I watched it yesterday, and part of me agrees that there are issues and they definitely need to be resolved, but part of me also felt it was a bit of a hit-piece because a fair amount of the complaints he had were not necessarily bugs, but things he didn't like about the vehicle. As I got toward the end, I began to think he just had an axe to grind because he got petty and nitpicky with the color of the car and the glovebox button and said nothing about the actual driving. I'm doing this from memory, so I may have missed a few things, but going through his video point by point (but out of order) here are my thoughts:
1) Pressing on the charging port doesn't work well - It works, but rather than tap, give a hard press at the bottom. You can also open it via the app and the pilot panel.
2) Frunk issue - Legitimate gripe in his case.
3) Cupholders - I smell a recall! Just kidding. Maybe there's an aftermarket opportunity to create inserts to enlarge them above the opening to hold Big Gulps.
4) Voice commands - Do people use this feature? I don't. My previous car had it, and it didn't work well either. That said, it's there, so they need to make it work.
5) Right side mirror angle in reverse - This is to avoid hitting the curb when backing up and is not a bug, or a problem, and can be disabled. He just doesn't like the angle (maybe because he's tall?). And there's no need to implement it on the driver's side because it's easy to see what's happening.
6) User profiles - The facial recognition is blocked because he's tall. This is a design flaw. A workaround for Lucid would be to move the steering wheel when the car is parked to a position where the camera isn't obscured. A taller driver may have to crouch a little to be in frame, and get the green checkmark, at which point the steering wheel can reposition to the driver's preferred position. Not ideal, but not much else can be done at this point other than restricting sales to people under a certain height. ;)
7) Switching user settings while driving - Bad idea and not a bug.
8) Backseat heaters - That's a new one I haven't heard of. He's not sure what caused it.
9) No music/CarPlay issues - Bug. Yes, this happens. Annoying. Wondering if he tried plugging his phone in.
10) Incorrectly recognizing which user profile to load - Bug. Yeah, this also happens. You can switch in the Pilot Panel but it takes a minute. An easy workaround when there are multiple users detected and the facial recognition is blocked, would be a message that asks 'Which of you is driving?'.
11) Software updates fail to load - That's a major bug and Lucid should jump on figuring out why that happens. It hasn't happened to me, but I've heard of it.
12) Blue vs. Gray - It's a cool color no matter what it's called.
13) Paying for charging - No idea if he doesn't have it set up right, or there's some other issue.
14) No button to open glovebox - Seriously?
15) Maps reset after switching profiles - Not a bug. The assumption is the new driver may be going somewhere different than the previous driver, even if the destination wasn't reached. There could be a message that asks if the new driver wants to keep the map directions rather than resetting.
15) Fingerprints - He didn't mention it, but his screen looked terrible. I got the matte finish screen protector from Twraps and it looks great.

I am pretty sure #8 is actually a bug that was a 'recall', but his software version seemed to be redacted back to some old version...

I couldn't get through the vid. Sorry but the whining about minor stuff got to me. You have to push the charging door firmly to get it to open? Tragic! The cup holders hang on too tightly? Horrific! (Admittedly I have a low tolerance for complaining.)

I know some of you have significant problems with the car, and I feel badly for you. But to say that everyone has this problems isn't close to being accurate.

Like I said, some people aren't bothered by anything, and others are bothered by everything.
amen. this guy used a clickbaity title and a thumbs down thumbnail just to rack up some views. he is complaining about a lot of things that are so minor, i couldn't watch till the end.

his complaint about not being able to program the garage homelink happened to me as well. customer service told me me to put a new battery and i was a bit hesistent like if the opener is opening my garage, it should have enough battery, no? anyways i swapped the battery and sure enough, it programmed immediately.

i understand some of these problems are real and Lucid ought to fix them but the way he presented it (including the terrible title, thumbnail image) makes it hard to take him seriously.

and to top it off, he factory reset the car twice for minor glitches (in the portion i watched), i bet this dude re-installs his Windows OS every time it crashes.

empathized a lot with the video and realized just how much I sort of just have learned to live with it
#8 (backseat heater randomly on) still happens to me on 2.8.16 but yeah not a good one for the 4 legged friends in the back. the other annoying one that happens daily is the climate turns off in the back when I start driving away (even if I've turned it off then on again before reversing out, idk just trying things).

As someone who has three Lucids (an Air and two Gravities), I have more sympathy for Fenske in this video.

2) Frunk issue -- He's actually been luckier than he knows. Our Air has had to have the struts replaced, the latches replaced, and the hinges realigned. In one case, the car left me stranded when it went into limp mode because the hood wouldn't relatch. The car has to be towed across the state to a service center. We no longer use the frunk of the Air for any purpose.

3) Cupholders -- This is about more than a Big Gulp. Our Air cupholders are so tight that I've several times spilled soda while trying to rock a can or a bottle free from the cupholder. I have learned not to put 12 oz. cans in them, and I now hold my thumb over the opening of a soda bottle while I rock and yank it out of the cupholder. It's an absurd situation for something so simple.

4) Voice commands -- The keyboard is located so low in the Air that I do try to use voice commands sometimes. They are very inconsistent, though, and control very few of the car's functions.

6) User profiles -- They're giving us fits in the Gravities. My driver profile has become corrupted in one of them, and the audio menu becomes inaccessible when I'm in it. And there is no way to delete and replace it without doing a factory reset.

6) Facial recognition -- Fenske is not the first or only to complain. Several reviewers had the same problem with the camera's location when they tested the Air shortly after its launch. It was enough of an issue that the Gravity facial recognition camera has been relocated to a dedicated module on the top of the steering column just behind the squircle. (However, six months after deliveries started, the Gravity facial recognition system still hasn't been activated.)

11) Software updates fail to load -- This has happened twice in our Gravities where even the Service Centers in Miami and in Rockwell, GA were unable to reload corrupted navigation and GPS software without getting an HQ software team involved. This kept one of them in the shop an extra two weeks.

14) No button to open glovebox -- Yes, seriously. It's aggravating when you're stuck on the road with the Pilot Screen blacked out, as has happened to us more than once in our Air and our Gravities. We take care to keep things we might need in case of a spill (see item 3) or rain (compact umbrellas) somewhere other than the glovebox where we would prefer to store them.

I do quite frequently whenever my wife decides to take the Lucid. It takes a good 2 to 3 minutes to load, a little bit annoying when you've already started driving. I did it once at a stoplight, thinking it would be very quick, but got a bunch ppl honking at me very soon.

I personally had all these issues quoted above, but it wasn't a huge deal. The frunk was good after they fixed it, and then I just never use it anymore, scared it might break again. I got stranded because of it, too. Like you, I try to provide constructive criticism in hoping the software gets better, not to be a dick. I also very appreciate your honest feedback, of which I do believe some other owners on here are much more lenient on almost everything, which leads to nothing. I so desperately wanted this car to be amazing to replace my Tesla....

Tell me about it. We've had two Gravities, both on identical software. The array of software glitches they have -- and how different those glitches are between the two cars -- is absolutely baffling.

One of the Gravities got totaled in a wreck last weekend, and we have a third one on order that has been built almost exactly six months after the first one. All Dream editions, identical software. It will be interesting to see how it behaves compared to the other two.

why are you so sadistic?

Yeah, as much as I'd like to give it a try, at this point there is just no way I can handle unreliability like this. Not with 3 kids, lots of driving for weekend ski trips, kids activities (10 trips per week for baseball), let alone getting on / off Vancouver Island several times a year. I mean serious what the hell happens if I actually cannot drive my car off a massive ferry? (the answer is that they have a truck that pushes you off... but you get my point).

My wife throws a hissy fit when the computer mouse button doesn't work properly. There is just no way in hell she'll handle this. Waiting to see what the new Audi Q9 or SQ9 will be like. But knowing Audi and being on my second one I'm sure it will be solid.

It's really too bad. I'm their ideal target market but alas....................

Audis are lame don’t get one of those.

Sorry to hear about those issues, I have my Lucid Air since svout a year and a half and drive short and long (>500 miles) trips with it without much problems. 2 things in response to some of your issues. First, like for any computer, you should do a (manual) reboot after any update. This fixes a lot of issue, its the same when you update your MS Windows or your Mac.
I noticed that Lucid makes 2 bluetooth connections to a phone, one seems to be for the car and the other one for car play. I realized this by deleting one and havig carplay no longer connected. Redid the pairing and it worked fine
A few other things
Trunk opening issue is effectively something I experienced too, qui adjustment of the mechanism by Lucid fixed it. I suspect the climate I live in is very different from the one where the car was produced and might impact how certain fittings react
No sound: I had that once, got it fixed with a quick reboot (push break and phone and "cross" buttons on the steering wheel, the software restarts when you release them. Check with Lucid to confirm what I say is right, I mention it from memory)
In general, it seems important to let the car fully boot, especially if you change profile. I noticed that if you jump in and drive before the booting is done, the car will drive but some functions may not be fully loaded. Yes this car is a super computer on wheels and it needs to be treated as such
Swapping of profiles: in our car, if we both enter it with our keys, the first profile in the list is the one loaded. Yes, it would be nice to be able to reorder them (Lucid, please?). And I agree either way Lucid policy not to change while driving. My wife is much shorter than me, I eould be crushed against the steering wheel if we where to change for her profile by mistake while driving
Heating of the back seats: not sure if thisnis what has happened, but the swapping between left and right seats or (again, from memory) between front and back seats) is done by a swipe and those "swipe" are pretty sensitive, so it does happen sometimes that one swipe by mistake and activates something for the wrong seat

I doubt I will help you much, you seems pretty irritated against Lucid and regretting your Tesla, but I hope this can help some of the other users. Frankly I have been driving BMW, Mercedes, large Volvos etc and I drive a lot. I would not change my Lucid for anything else, even if (3 times in 18months and 25'0000 Km) I did have to reboot it ( because I was a bit too quick to get going)

It would help if the Lucid owners manual had a search feature, especially as it's available only in computer format. As it stands it can be very tedious to find what you need.

For example, my profile got corrupted in our Gravity. Yesterday I tried to delete it to create a new one but couldn't find anything under the profile settings that did so. So I had to resort to the owners manual. But there was no way to search the term "delete profile" or "remove profile" or even just "profile". So I had to guess whether information about profiles was under "Vehicle Overview" or "Driving & Operating" or some other heading.
Fwiw, you can Ctrl-F/Cmd-F in the PDF: https://lucidmotors.com/media/document/OM_Air_enUS_v35_1.pdf

I agree... With the limited money they have, the money the are paying Timothee and the basketball players could have gone to hiring a whole new team of ambitious innovative college software grads to fix the problems.
I cannot fathom why people keep bringing this up as if it makes any sense. Lucid has no shortage of cash. Money isn't the problem. They can do both marketing and recruiting at the same time. In fact, they do. So does every other company, lol.

I know it's not the common view here, but I love the fact that they are making "robustness" updates. The fact that they don't have what to report means that they are fixing long standing issues and cleaning up the code. Of course, there are going to be issues when you do that, and we have all seen them.
hey, we found common ground!
