"I'm looking to enhance the security of my garage door system. What are some effective measures or upgrades I can implement to ensure better security? Any recommendations for smart garage door openers or security features? How do you manage access control and monitoring for your garage? I appreciate any advice or experiences you can share!"

First, use a modern rolling-code opener. If your garage door has breakable windows, remove the short rope and handle from the opener's emergency release.
Chamberlain's MyQ phone app works well for daily tasks. It is a cloud-based way to monitor and open your doors, so it does introduce an attack surface. Though not one that thieves have been using.

Newer garage door openers also come with a built-in camera for remote monitoring and allow for delivery access, which I never use.

Upgrading to a smart garage door opener with encrypted signals, real-time alerts, and app control is one of the best ways to boost security. Options like Chamberlain MyQ, LiftMaster Secure View, or Genie Aladdin Connect let you monitor and manage access remotely. Adding a camera or door sensor provides extra visibility, while reinforcing the door with a manual lock or deadbolt increases physical security. Make sure your Wi-Fi network is secure and limit who has access permissions to keep your garage better protected.

I'm sorry, but as someone who's been in IT for 30+ years, the very last thing I would EVER do to increase security of anything , especially a home entry method, is connect something to the Internet.

Doesn't have to be connected to the internet. You can connect a ratgdo, for example, to your LAN, and then just use it when you connect to your wifi when you get home. You can also expose it (and Home Assistant or anything else) over a wireguard, tailscale, or other VPN tunnel (as you obviously know).

But yeah, I got rid of the MyQ cloud nonsense as soon as I had a better option, for the same reason.

(check out ratgdo, you'll like it, it sounds right up your alley)

Why worry about online hack when garage door can be opened with Sawzall in 2 minutes?
But for overall smart home convenience my vote is also for Ratgdo with Home Assistant, if you are in IT and want a time sucking hobby 😉

Yeah I've been thinking of setting up HA to get the detailed data from the car but I don't even have time for my existing hobbies, and my current job is stressful enough that I don't even want to touch a computer once I'm off the clock. It hasn't always been that way but that's where I'm at currently.

Because it isn't just about opening the garage door. Most people have never heard of a vlan, so anything in their house they connect to the internet that is breached is... a beachhead for the rest of the network. It's one thing if your garage door opens. It's entirely another if your baby's baby monitor starts whispering things, you know?

I'd love to! I did American Kenpo in the past and loved it. Also rock climbing. Sadly, a knee surgery, two back surgeries, and a bulging disk in my neck have put an end to many of my favorite physical activities. I'm pretty much down to swimming and cycling at this point.
