Gravity Bugs / Issues

And here's the d-pad issue not registering presses. My theory is it happens a lot more in direct sunlight or when it gets warmer from the sun, but it's just a theory. It's infuriating sometimes. I can press the same cancel Dream Drive button 5 times (properly, not at the lip) before it works.

For the D-Pad, at least, you really can’t just push it quickly like you’re doing. It will work sometimes and not others - as you’re experiencing. In order for it to work consistently (for me), I have to have my full finger print on it and press it in and hold for just a second. Just pushing and releasing like a regular button doesn’t work as it’s capacitive. It takes a LOT of getting used to, but it works for me 95%+ of the time now.

I think the need for a fairly prolonged touch makes sense. You wouldn't want controls that susceptible to being brushed casually or accidentally to be highly sensitive. Personally, I find them very well thought out.

And the claim in a recent "Edmuds" video that they are flimsy is total nonsense, to the point of being malicious misrepresentation.

Agree on both accounts. Edmunds has become a click bait site like many others. It’s a shame as I used to really enjoy it for objective info. I don’t think there are any more sites with objective info any longer as they all rely so much an ads, click throughs, partnerships, etc.

The steering wheel buttons ARE tough to get used to, but once you do, they’re fine.

"Edmuds" was a typo, as I meant "Edmunds". But I think that's the name I'll now adopt for referring to that rag of CarMax-owned clickbait.

To adjust speed when in drive assist mode, I need to either hold to +/- 5mph or press for +/- 1mph. Requiring a long press doesn't make sense there and confuses even more - sometimes a firm press does nothing, sometimes +/-1 mph but it you hold it just a tad too long, it turns into +/- 5mph.

Plus, the right side d-pad works a lot more consistently for regular single taps.

And the left one goes between responding as expected to responding erratically.

I'm sorry, but you cannot convince me this is on purpose and by design.

(I won't even mention how much worse the process of adjusting speed in the Gravity compared to the scroll wheels in my Teslas.)

I can’t say whether they knew how finicky it would be. I can say I know the d pad is both capacitive and requires a push/pressure click. It takes a lot of getting used to, but it does work - and yes, it’s somewhat annoying and I think the capacitive portion of the dpads is underutilized at this point and doesn’t really justify the annoyance. I tested this a while ago with non-capacitive tools and nothing happens even with a button push.

But, that’s how it works. You may have a specific issue with your left one - no way for me to know - and I don’t doubt it’s hard.

Just trying to say the way you’re doing it in the video will not work 100% of the time as that’s not how it works - intended or not. But there IS a way to get them to work 95%+ of the time.

As others have mentioned, several times, this is not a Tesla. You won't get same results. If folks like the way Teslas do things, they probably should buy one of those instead.

It's a tired argument. I like how Tesla does a lot of things and I like how Lucid does a lot of things. I picked Lucid this time around, and any comparisons to Teslas are constructive criticism - i.e. things could work better if Lucid is willing to fix them. And I know they are, they want to be the best in the business.

Regarding my car potentially having a faulty left d-pad, it's possible. Though the same issue (and the video I recorded above) is on the loaner Gravity.

From an engineering point of view, I understand having both capacitive and physical buttons - they each have their use and I like how I can swipe up and down or left and right without pressing to change screens in the Gravity. What I really don't understand is why they completely nerfed the physical presses by adding a requirement that in order to register as a press, it also needs to register the capacitive touch. A physical press should override and disregard anything from the capacitive side. Pressing on the lip should just work because it detects a definitive click. So does pressing on the button in any other location, as long as it clicks. This is an engineering failure, and I hope they address it somehow.

I went in today to check out my ordered GGT in hopes of determining I am comfortable with taking delivery. I did a pretty thorough check of the car (but am not allowed to drive it) and it checked out pretty well. The issues:

Nav - when we tried to test it we got a message that maps needed to be loaded before using. The car indicated a cel connection, but would not load maps. I am not sure if this is an issue, or just a “Lucid needs to prep the car” thing. The SA didn’t know either?
Does anyone have any insight on this? I don’t recall seeing this specific problem being mentioned before.

I kept getting a Headlight warning message popping up on the left side of the main screen. Don’t think anything is wrong with the lights, but the message is a bit annoying.

I couldn’t get my phone to charge on the center console, but the SA’s would charge, so probably something to do with my phone case?

I didn’t have a chance to fully check out the fob and use of the key card. However, when leaving the car it did not auto lock, so this aspect needs more testing.

All of these, except maybe the phone charging, need to be fixed or investigated further before I am going to proceed….

Amen. I have read that there may be only one physical switch under each of the L/R D pads. If so that would mean capacitive location is required to determine which button the driver intended.

Anyone know if that is true?

Well, another day, another issue (or two) with our Gravity.

We got in the car after dinner and noticed the first foot or so of the passenger door accent light was out. I thought I would do a reboot when I got home to see if that resolved the problem. It turned out I had to do the reboot anyway, because when I pulled into the garage and put the car in park, I got a red warning "PARK" light and an annoying bong alarm that wouldn't stop no matter what I did. The reboot terminated the warning (with no indication of its purpose ever given) but did not restore the accent light.

In short, it was a typical day with our Gravity: a wonderful driving experience darkened by a torture chamber of false warnings, software glitches, and feature malfunctions.

I'm now waiting to hear back from Lucid whether it's going to take yet another Service Center visit to resolve this lighting issue.

And I'm still waiting to hear from Lucid what they are going to do about the GPS system malfunctioning again. This car is on the verge of unseating a 1998 Corvette as the most chronically defective vehicle I have ever owned -- something I had not thought possible.

Unfortunately, that annoying bong parking sound thing is a bug several folks have reported. I experienced it for the first time over the weekend. Only way to get it to turn off is a reset. Seems to start when the parking warning actually starts/needs to go off and then gets stuck and never turns off.

No idea about the accent light, but gosh, can’t believe it wouldn’t be easier for Lucid (and you!) to just get you new cars at this point. And then take yours back to the lab and learn what’s going on.

Even if they just gave you a GGT loaner for now, they clearly had plenty of extra cars and issues like this don’t help them from a PR perspective.

I agree and suggested that right to Marc Winterhoff's face at the San Jose SC Grand opening last weekend that they need to give that poor guy (as in unfortunate...not socioeconomic) in Florida a new car and take his issue ridden Gravity back to study thoroughly and train their factory guys on what not to do!
We got your back bro...no one should suffer through what you have!!

Thanks for the concern and sympathy. But, honestly, I can make my way through this . . . unless the second Gravity we'll be getting from the PPF installer in a couple of days has anything like this number of problems.

My concern, though, as a stockholder and brand fan is much bigger.

Although some, perhaps most, Gravities delivered so far have been fine except for the ubiquitous software issues that I'm sure Lucid will slog through and resolve with OTA updates, there is still something very troubling going on. Too many owners just on the this forum have reported drive unit failures, front console wiring problems, entry/start issues, rear seat noises that cannot be resolved (even requiring seat replacements in some cases), HUD replacements, frunk opening issues, etc.

This is indicative of the fact that the Gravity was not yet ready to start deliveries. More testing was needed, more production line procedures needed to be honed, more inspection was needed, more sales and delivery training was needed. Instead, just as they did with the Air four years ago, Lucid decided to start deliveries with dysfunctional software and push what should have been engineering and factory work onto the Service organization, where it is now taking weeks for some owners to get appointments.

The Gravity bones are strong -- I would argue even standard-setting -- but the product was brought to market prematurely. My guess is Lucid will scrape through this as they did with the early Air issues. But they did so at a reputational costs that still lingers. If they do it again -- and nothing right now convinces me they won't -- with a truly mass market product such as the Earth, then Lucid will be dead in the water.

And the finest automotive engineering I've seen in my lifetime will have come to naught.

I'm reading this and wondering why I haven't even tried these features in my GDE even though I've had it for over three months and have almost 6,000 miles on it? It's because the basic get in and drive it functionality is still so finicky I haven't even began to delve into other features! By the way, is this car supposed to do CarPlay? My co-workers Air has CarPlay, something I missed in both my Tesla and Rivian.

Air has Carplay. Gravity supposed to get it some time this year.

Anyone have DD and backup cameras suddenly stop working? Drive home from the SC yesterday and all was fine. Today no backups, lane change or DD. Strangely the cameras are working because I can activate them through live view.

Done the reset procedure several times now.
Nope that’s a new one.

My Gravity frunk works perfect every single time.
I have never heard any seat squeak but do have a car seat in the left passenger seat buckled in.
My center console has never recognized my keycards, but does sometimes charge my phone wirelessly so I’m guessing I’ll need a new center console.
I also found if you use your phone app to unlock the vehicle instead of fob, it switches to guest profile, so don’t do that.
My right second row passenger seat will not move forward with the button unless I manually move it slightly first with the seat controls, then it moves forward for 3rd row access fine.

Every other issue is dumb software crap that’s all false alerts, black screens, etc. Navigation works fine too. Wheel buttons work fine. DDPro2 works REALLY well except this AM in very heavy rain it almost went over the lane marker without recognizing but otherwise it’s been great.

We have so many other issues that I haven't paid much attention to phone charging. We have noticed that our phones sometimes charge and sometimes don't when on the charge pads. However, they sometimes slide forward while driving, and I've seen posts indicating that could be the reason.

Do you think it could be that, or might we also have a problem with the console wiring? (I'm almost afraid to ask, but I might as well know everything to ask for on the next service visit.)

My Gravity comes early next year. You guys are making me want to keep my Air.
I had a number of issues a year ago (software all) which have resolved with OTA updates and better understanding on my part. I hope the same is true wit my Gravity.
