Lucid's snow socks

Has anyone tried Lucid's snow socks? I'm thinking of taking the Air to Yosemite in Feb, if the weather is clear, to see the Firefall.

Snow socks are for slippery emergencies, not for planned use on a trip. They wear out quickly and don't do much good in deep snow. If you're just worried about getting stuck in a slippery patch, by all means, throw them in your trunk and hope you don't have to use them. Think of them like a bag of sand but that magically stays with your tires, just giving a bit of extra grip. But plan A should be winter tires, and a nice place to wait it out should you get more than a couple inches on the road given the Air's ground clearance.

Yep, that's the plan. If the weather isn't clear, we either won't go or we'll take our XC40 EV. The Lucid socks would just be in case we miscalculate and get stuck in an icy parking lot on my 19" all-seasons.

They go on the rear wheels. Please ignore anyone else who says otherwise. If it’s FWD, then fine, put them on the front.

But Lucid doesn’t sell a FWD car.

(They work fine, and are helpful, but aren’t a replacement for winter tires. But if you run into a storm and CHP is requiring chains on all seasons, they will accept the socks on AWD all seasons instead)

Funny, of all the times I drove back and forth to Tahoe in terrible weather, the CHP never required chains be installed on 4WD with all-seasons - only that you carry them.

Apparently there are worse storms

I drove through a really bad storm in Tahoe that I wasn’t sure we’d make it out of, heh, in the Ioniq 5. I was very glad I wasn’t on my 21s.

Funny, of all the times I drove back and forth to Tahoe in terrible weather, the CHP never required chains be installed on 4WD with all-seasons - only that you carry them.

I drive up and back from the Bay Area to Tahoe many times each (snowboarding!) season. these days it seeems, when it's bad enough for say 4x4's to chain up (I drive a Land Rover) CHP/CADOT just closes the roads now. but yep, I carry socks as a backup.

I have a Gravity GT on order and I am a bit concerned about how it will stack up against the LR's I usually I drive in those conditions with the reduced clearance.

just for clarity, if it's snowing a lot on I-80, but not enough for them to close it down, CA-DOT will setup a tire check for everyone to pass through. I've had that happen a few times with my Land Rover on the way to Tahoe. they are looking for the M&S and/or three-peak mountain symbols on the tires. that's when they'll ask about chains or snow socks if you're not in what they consider a 4x4.

yep. which is nice. I carry them in my Rover instead of chains now (not that I've need them). some other states like Colorado allow them as well.

years ago I was stopped from going into Yoesemite park in the winter with a Nissan Pathfinder which had a true 4x4, limited-slip differential and a low-speed transfer case, because I didn't have chains. had to buy some outside the park before they'd let us in. and of course we never used them. they've eased up on the regs some since then.

More states have started to allow them because there are so many vehicles on which chains literally void the warranty and are explicitly called out in the manual. Lucid is one such company that explicitly only allows socks.
