Lucid Air Grand Touring
My recent 2,800-mile trip (Phoenix to LA to Bay Area and back, plus roaming around LA and the Bay Area).

I got my AGT (19” wheels w/ cover) in Nov. 2022. This is my first long road-trip in my AGT.

Nothing profound. Just want to share my experience:

The Good:

  • The car drove nicely, handled well. No mechanical breakdown. Average about 3.0 miles/kW-hr on the highway. Total trip efficiency was 3.7 miles/kW-hr. Pretty much what I’d expected.
  • Mechanically, the AGT performed well. Acceleration, handling etc. all great.
The Surprise:

I had plenty of bad experiences with EA in the Phoenix area. But I think they are getting better. On this trip, I probably charged 20 times at various EA locations in CA. All but one (Palm Springs) went off without a hitch!

Cabin Comfort:

  • Good overall. However, I found the AGT front seats not that comfortable for such a long trip. Seat padding is sub-par. My Lexus’ seats are far better!
  • AC is OK….a bit noisy. Heat pump takes longer to cool down.
The Bad:

  • Lucid’s Infotainment is messy with inexplicable glitches.
  • Navigation on the Lucid is a frustrating experience. Specifically,
  • Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
  • At the beginning of my trip, I could enter my destination and navigation was visible on both the console and the Pilot Panel.
  • From time-to-time, the Pilot Panel Navigation display would disappear when other functions (e.g., Trip info, adjust seats/mirrors, etc.) were invoked and the Pilot Panel Navigation would not return even after the other functions were terminated.
  • Incoming phone calls and text messages block the navigation panel on the dashboard. And the blocked dash navigation panel does not always resume automatically when the call/text were terminated. Other than cancelling the call/text, I didn’t see a button to minimize the call/text so I can see the navigation screen while the call is in progress. This was very frustrating and unsafe!
  • Inexplicably, the text entry for destination on the navigation screen would freeze up (i.e., not taking any inputs) and the Pilot Panel Navigation would not display. Thus, there is no (text) means of entering a destination.
  • I tried invoking the navigation using Alexa. It works some/most of the time, but not always.
  • The Lucid navigation is laggy. It is fine to enter an initial destination (e.g., Phoenix to LA) and then drive off. However, if there is a detour or if you missed a turn, the re-routing is slow and ineffective.
  • As a result, I was navigating with my phone most of the time. This is unsafe and unacceptable!
  • My sense is, the various infotainment functions (navigation, calls, text messages, garage doors, etc.) use shared resources (e.g., compute/screen/console real-estate) and Lucid did a poor job in the management/arbitration of these functions. It is clear the conflicts are there. However, the conflicts/restores are not always the same (as the resource contentions depend on the history). As a result, the manifestation appears random and inexplicable!

I’ve raised these issues many times (RE: software conflicts and lack of system validation).
Overall:

  • I believe Lucid has a great electro-mechanical platform, but they short-changed themselves (and their customers) with half-baked software.
  • Lucid has been shipping cars for almost 2 years. It is about time they get serious about fixing their software bugs and validation. Software is part of the driving experience, not just the plush cabin and the acceleration.

Good review. Do you have android home?

All you need to do is hit the navigation button on the right Glass Cockpit panel (like you would to normally bring it up in the first place). The nav will be back on the screen and the call info will go away.

Yes, the Lucid UI is not ready for prime time. It’s a shame. Such a great piece of hardware, such a lacking piece of software. I have done everything in my power, which is of course limited, to help Lucid improve this. I have made videos, had conversations with Lucid employees and executives, made an entire website of wish list and bug items, conducted huge polls and surveys to prioritize issues, etc. While everybody has been extremely nice, there has been almost zero change. Frustrating, to say the least.

CarPlay has resolved almost everything for me. I have no more frustrations with navigation, audio, Homelink, etc. It’s now a pleasure to enjoy the car and not worry about the glitches. Of course, this solution is not without its negatives. CarPlay is confined to a window that is way too small considering the overall amount of screen space available in the car. It doesn’t help non-Apple users and really shouldn’t be necessary to enjoy the car.

There is another issue I should point out:

> "miles remaining" at the end of the navigation.
Several folks have noted that with the TRIP app and recent improvements in the "miles remaining" estimation, the end mileage is much closer to "reality".
While that is true, you need to be careful....Yes, the estimate in the TRIP end mileage remaining is more accurate. HOWEVER, the computer simply updates the end mileage as you progress. Hence, by definition, it will be more accurate. I don't think the computer "predicts" the miles remaining at the onset of the trip based on topography and efficiency etc..
> imagine a scenario where you have 200 miles showing on your range. You embark on a 175 mile trip. The first 125 miles is flat and the last 50 miles is all up hill. The computer estimates you have 25 miles remaining at the end of the trip. You arrive at the foot of the hill (last 50 miles) and it says you have "75 miles range" and "25 miles remaining" at the end of the trip. Well, you don't! The uphill trek will use up a lot more energy than the previous 125 miles.
> I can see the computer updating the "miles remaining" as I traverse the topography. In don't think navigation has the built-in sophistication to understand the topography and the resultant energy consumption. Simply put, it is a 2D range prediction, not a 3D topographic/energy consumption prediction.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Of all folks on this forum, you (Bobby) have provided the most insight and leadership. I share your frustration. I've tried repeatedly to get Lucid to step up to the plate and deal with the UI/SW issues but with no success.

My believe is:
Over time, more and more auto manaufacturers will deafult to CarPaly and Android Auto. In the end, once you get over the gee-wiz factor of a custom fancy UI, a reliable UI is essential to the operations of the car, safety and enjoyment.

I did, multiple times. First, it doesn't always work. Second, it does not restore navigation on the Pilot Panel

Even if you “drag down” the nav panel?

That's what I thought. I will try it again. From tiem to time, the navigation panel becomes non-responsive vis-a-vis, does not respond to inputs.

I don’t think it’s fair to say there has been “almost zero change.” I’ve seen a massive improvement in the 1.5 years or so I’ve owned the car.

That said, I also almost never run into glitches anymore, especially as I mostly use CarPlay for nav now. Sound works great, etc., and the new logo reset works to reset the car the once-every-couple-weeks I need to. That’s no less frequent than I had to with the Tesla rental 🤷‍♂️

That said, of course I wish they’d move faster; but I suspect we’d say that no matter what speed they moved at, even if it was breakneck.

I agree there has been a massive increase in performance and squashing of some bugs. Content, not so much. We haven’t really seen much in the way of checking off items from the wish-list since 2.0 was released. CarPlay and Highway Assist are the only major items in the past six months, and both of those were originally promised long before they were released.

CarPlay
Highway Assist
Sirius XM
Offline Navigation
Accurate range estimates when using Nav
Open the trunk with the fob
High Beam Assist
Automatic Headlight Leveling
De-Ice Mode

Those are the ones I remember. I'm sure there are more.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my car. Love. But everything you mention (other than HA) is on my list of basic expectations for a luxury car.

Well, my view is, even with these "massive improvements" over the past 1.5 years, Lucid is still behind its competition when it comes to the UI and reliability of its SW. Many of the items you mentioned have been available on other competitive cars years ago. For example, my 2017 Lexus RX450H has most of the same HA features Lucid current activated Perhaps Lucid, with its many sensors and LIDAR, will accomplish much more HA in the future. And my 2019 Honda Calrity has more sophisticated charge-scheduling than my Lucid.
Yes, on-going improvement by L:ucid is good, but it is not adequate Lucid is competing with BMW. MB, Gensis, Tesla, Lexus, etc.. It must pay more attention to feedback from its owners/users and get on par with its competition. As it stands, Lucid is a great mechnical platform but sadly hampered by its UI/SW. In my opinion. this is not a technical issue per se (as many competitiirs have better UI/SW already). It is a management problem!

SiriusXM functionality is still in beta testing. That's why it's free to you. If you prefer, you can pay for an account and run it through your CarPlay if you have an iPhone or bluetooth on an Android.

I don't disagree but this car does not have SiriusXM hardware. It relies on the streaming service. The benefit of that is the streaming service has many more channels and options. The negative is, since there's no actual satellite connection your results may vary based on the cellular signal at your location. That's why CarPlay does much better for me at my location, with Verizon is much stronger than a built in service.

Does anyone have an easy way to tune Sirius XM stations? All I have been able to find is pushing the channel up or down arrows, which takes forever
