Wiper troubles

Gravity GT
As everyone else has noted, the auto wiper function doesn't work well enough in real use. Its sensitivity is way too low, doesn't speed up enough as rain increases, and apparently cannot be adjusted.

But there are now two other wiper issues that I'm seeing:

1. Around the time of the latest software update, my GT's auto wiper function is now stuck on "2"; before I could set the auto to 1, 2, or 3. Has anyone else seen this, or is there something broken on my car? As crappy as it its, I'd like it at least to work as designed.

2. The rear wiper's intermittent feature is WAY too frequent, maybe only 1.5 seconds between swipes: nearly continuous. This should be every 8-15 seconds max, since very little water or snow really settles back here. Does this bother anyone else?

Thanks,
Mike

I agree. On my Gravity, if I change the “auto”setting to 1 or 3, it instantly switches back to 2, which is too slow and intermittent to clear the window in moderate or heavy rain. The auto wiper function is effectively broken in this update.

Definitely some improvement needed in the settings. Another thing I see a bunch is that if I use the button on the steering wheel stalk for the washer it turns the wipers on to that same 2 setting, it wasn't doing it prior to 3.4.1.

Also, can we all agree that the wiper blades they used are terrible?

Try a soft or hard reset? There are still bugs in 3.4.1. I have no problems with all three auto settings nor fixed wiper speed adjustment.

I used the wipers all last week in various rain conditions down in LA. No real complaints with the auto settings. Some auto wiper adjustment here and there, but nothing unusual compared to other cars. Much better than Tesla auto wipers, which are pretty much unusable. I have yet to get in a car that has auto wipers dialed in perfectly at all speeds.

Agree that the wiper blades seem low quality. I’ll change them out to silicon blades in the fall. Silicon blades are amazing.

Reset did nothing. Still stuck on the middle setting of auto. We aren’t making this up.

Also yes, the wipers themselves are also garbage, leaving a smear of water droplets in my line of vision after every swipe.

I’m good with the front wipers and the intermittent settings - I agree on the rear wiper - it is set for a vehicle without a rear spoiler, where the rear window gets dirtier more often.

Probably pretty low on the software priority list…

Found that the auto wipers worked perfectly - as long as your stopped. Once you start moving they suck, I mean they don't suck or wipe and seem to allow a thick film of water. Then found that I can select auto 1 or 2 but not 3. It immediately bounces back to 2.

Have you tried soft or hard reset? In last week’s rain, I typically had the wiper auto setting on 3 during last week‘s rain.

I also agree the rear wiper intermittent setting wipes too much. I kept it off and manually triggered a wipe when I needed it.

Unfortunately, even with 3.4.1, I’ve had various glitches where I had to do soft/hard resets. So far, I’ve submitted 18 bug reports on 3.4.1 according to swfeedback.

I have the same issue with the front auto wipers. I can select 1 or 2 but not 3. Resets don't seem to affect it. I'm resigned to using the manual settings.

Have you tried a hard reset? Hold the brake down, followed by the X plus Mic buttons for at least 30 seconds. Don’t let go after the 1st chime that sounds around 10 seconds (soft reset). Wait until the double chime that comes around the 20-30 second mark (hard reset).

If that doesn’t work, the only option that I see is to schedule service.

Oh, yeah. Soft reset, hard reset. I just got the car back from service but I forgot to mention this particular concern. This glitch just doesn't bother me that much. I was chiming in to indicate it's not just unique to the original poster.

Adding my voice, the wipers do suck, even when wiping at proper intervals, which they don’t.

Lucid changed the inserts and it made it a little better for like a week.

I have been trying to find replacement inserts and haven’t found something similar to the silicone PIAA that I used on all my other vehicles. Destroyed about $120 worth of blades trying though…

I don't know if this applies to any of the "wipe quality" in your windshield wipers, however both my Gravity and my Polestar had terrible coverage misses on the driver's side. In BOTH cases (probably same wiper supplier) the driver's side rubber blade had come out of the track in the arm for a couple inches. I took the arms off, used a rounded-edge plastic blade to re-insert the rubber blade along the arm and haven't had a bit of problem from either car since.

Thanks for taking the hit and trying. I’m interested in what inserts would fit also since I don’t want to pay for Lucid’s overpriced wiper replacements.

You could pay for their replacements…but it’s just not worth it even if they were free, which you could in fact request.

Sorta annoying that when you want to manually engage the wiper, repeated engagement in the stalk button cycles through settings. If I want to just engage once and then a second time it then turns the wipers on. Very annoying.

I can't comment too much on the software angle of things - I don't use the auto feature very much. I've never found it particularly good on any car.

But I 100% agree that the wipers sort of suck on the Gravity. My Tesla wipers also kind of sucked so I guess I'm used to it, but having owned a German car in the distant past, it's kind of annoying not to have the kind of excellent wiper performance I enjoyed in a C-Class like, 15-20 years ago. In my GDE:

- The front wiper blades left a big streak right in the middle of the driver's side wiper, pretty much right at my eye level dead center in the field of view. Mobile service just replaced the wipers and they're better now, but still just not the kind of water clearing power I know is possible. And this is even after having the car ceramic coated.
- The front cleaning function seems like a great idea the way they inject wiper fluid all the way up and down the wipers through little holes, but in practice they just don't work that well. The jets turn on a little slowly, and it seems like there's not enough fluid coming out. And so what I end up with are arced stripes - the windshield is clean at the injectors but leaves dirt in between. This is worse on the passenger side for some reason. But with all the road salt we've had of late, my windshield is never clean.
- The rear wipers just don't work all that well - to be fair I've never had great rear wipers on any car; maybe the curvature of the rear window makes it hard to maintain even pressure. The wipers clean a band back there, but it's only about 2/3 of what I think the wiper length is.
- The rear cleaning function is awful, it barely works.
- For the rear, it seems like all issues are amplified because the aerodynamics of the Gravity seem to always make that rear window filthy.

The air has the same garbage squirters that trickle out the length of the arm, but it’s not quite enough, and then you apparently can spray more. It’s really bad.

Dribbling washer fluid out of the wiper arm just doesn’t work especially in places like snowy/ slushy New England in the winter. 16 + years ago my top of the line Jaguar 🐆 XF also had wipers that tried to work on the exact same principle, they were also very poor! Only way to keep clean is a 🪣 of soapy water with a dash of Isopropyl Alcohol!

Echoing the “stuck in level 2 when in auto” concerns. I’ve done all the re-sets and hasn’t fixed…. Anyone have luck getting that setting to revert back to letting you choose level 3 in auto? Thanks.
