Why I bought an EV other than Lucid Air

Sorry. This is a rant....

At what point can we just let threads like this die? I know I'm doing it, but I hate how titles like this are constantly being resurrected to the top of the heap. The OP isn't going to change his mind. He already has his BMW and nearby service center, and if my BMW experience is any indicator, he'll be darned glad it's nearby.

Nobody in their right mind would buy a Lucid if they thought that Consumer Reports rating was anyway near accurate. In my opinion, that says far more about Consumer Reports than it does about Lucid. Remember how they raved that the Tesla Model S was hands-down the best car ever built?

Lucid's are far from perfect, and anybody who bought one expecting no growing pains doesn't understand what it means to be an early adopter. Same thing with expecting a robust service infrastructure, although I do think the slow roll out of that is a legitimate gripe.

I have true empathy for anyone who is dealing with serious issues, but many of the complaints are minor in the scheme of things. Whether major or minor, I do want to hear about those, and what can/has/must be done to resolve them. That kind of dialogue is invaluable to me. I just don't see what ongoing threads built around either defending the brand or piling on the attack accomplish other than providing fodder for the LCID short sellers.
You are thinking of way older BMW’s. I have owned a lot of BMW’s and still own a 8 year old X5d and they have all been flawless. The OP picked a good car. I really like the i5, just wished it had more range. Love iDrive in the BMW too. Looking forward to the next generation of EV BMW’s where I think they will be built from the ground up.

Great response. I think the OP made a reasonable decision based on the data that he had. Unfortunately, the frequency of repairs per any car is a bell curve with outliers at either end. It's unfortunate that he was worried about reliability based on CR and anecdotal information from the forum. When looking at CR ratings, I found it important to drill down to the individual scores rather than just looking at the overall rating. You'd be surprised how subjective some of the individual scores can be... As far as reliability, the number of Airs that were used was such a small sample that the predictive ability is poor -the point that Borski made. The distance to a service center is a real consideration and the i5 is not a bad choice. So good luck to @Longshanks and I'm sure you'll enjoy your purchase!

Speaking of purchases, I guess I'll have to wait a little longer to cash in that Lucid stock for a new Sapphire...😪

Forgive me for asking but what’s the point of coming here and telling people why you don’t buy the car they’re passionate about? Why go to a Rolling Stones concert to tell people why you’re not buying tickets to that concert?

This is the equivalent of a reverse Dear John letter: it’s you, not me.

I don’t understand why this forum serves as a confessional for people to tell others why your heart was broken.
Buy your new car and move on. We all make choices in life and some are bad. If you made one, learn from it. No need to tell people who made a good decision why you felt yours was wrong.

I am glad nevertheless that your BMW experience is good. I’m happy for you.

You’re thinking that your individual experiences are a good indicator of overall trends. That’s a trap.

By any statistical test, the Air is a very reliable car. If you read these forums, you’ll get a very different picture, because people don’t “take note” when their vehicles just work well.

My Ioniq 5 experience has been pretty awful; constantly in and out of service, lots of reboots, features that will just never work, OTAs that never come, etc.

@HariK’s experience with his Ioniq 5 (which is one model year younger) has been the polar opposite.

I hope OP has no issues with their BMW; but just like I’ve had very few issues with my Air, it’s entirely dependent on the vehicle, and not the model, in my estimation.

Aww @borski, even perfect reliability doesn't make it less uglier...😉

I actually like the Ioniq 5’s looks. They are definitely not timeless, but I think it looks good.

I also like the Ioniq 6 though (both pre and post- refresh), so my tastes are apparently different from many haha
