The Long Goodbye

I don't think anyone on here thinks @hmp10 is exaggerating at all! He has a long history here and is trusted by most and has been thru significantly more with these vehicles than probably anyone. Whether representative of overall owners, none of us outside of Lucid can tell so no need to hash it out or throw guess out there. Some Gravity and Airs have problems, they need to be addressed quickly and I think we can all agree on that. I think Lucid's team is on the right track now but it will take time to see the fruits of their labor. If by fall, most of the folks who had issues have been resolved and no new ones have popped up, we'll know. If not, again, we'll know...

So it's not quite right that you have virtualizations for everything in the car. Pretty much all cars nowadays have two separate OSs running:
  • A real-time OS like QNX that guarantees execution at a given time interval (i.e., no system interrupts delaying execution) which is used for core vehicle functionality like traction control, brakes, etc.
  • A more general-purpose OS like Android Automotive or Linux which runs the infotainment systems, including parts of the Gravity's 2 screens
The two systems are deliberately isolated from each other so that the infotainment system crashing, or lagging, shouldn't impact the car's ability to drive. And in fact, you can test this: if you soft/hard reset the infotainment systems, the car still drives and responds to the steering wheel, accelerator/brakes, lights still function, etc.

Most of what the lagging, glitches, etc. posted here, the rearchitected system, virtualization, etc. all refer to the general OS and not the real-time OS. It's necessary b/c it's not realistic to program the UI/UX or most of the features at a hardware level; the graphics, animations, etc. leverage graphical frameworks, and even if you could program all of it at a low level, you still need to account for differences in hardware manufacturers and vendors, e.g., sourcing ultra-wideband radios for keyfobs and PaaK. Evidently Lucid built their stack at too high of a level and didn't consider the fully-integrated performance of the entire OS stack, and they're trying to rectify that mistake now.
I understand and agree with your statement about the two separate OS for driving and infotainment. However, I don't think you can reset the infotainment OS while you are driving. You must be in park to initiate the reset, at least in the past.

Polestar allows it while driving. Gravity doesn't, because pushing the brake sort of negates that behavior. 🤣

Ah right. I was thinking of my time w/ the Model X, where I have instituted a reset (or had the system itself just reboot on me) while I was driving. In the Gravity, if memory serves I've also done a reset, and before the systems have fully started up again I've already started backing up the car (I was in a hurry).

Obviously, as a long time Lucid bull myself, I am saddened to learn that your frustration reached the breaking point. I applaud you for owning three Lucid vehicles. Hopefully, Lucid will EARN your business in the future. While I love my Air GT which has been my daily driver for 4+ years now, I have avoided buying a Gravity because of all of the negative banter on this forum. I am shocked that Lucid dropped the software ball on their second model. I remain optimistic that Lucid will "get it" and enact the needed fixes -- even if too late for you.

I concur with other posts in this thread that Lucid MUST get the v1.0 of Cosmos UI software RIGHT. Day one expectations should be PAAK, reliable key fobs. It has to just "work" every time. Of note, I believe that Cosmos will have Tesla model 3/Y like non-powered door handles. Lucid must get Cosmos/Earth right from day one. It's a must.
I’m in the same boat. I’ve had my AGT for 3.5 years. I still love it. However I am looking to upgrade to the Gravity. Like you, I’m concerned about the many negatives I read here about the Gravity. In the meantime I’m still enjoying my AGT.

That could just as easily mean there aren't enough problem-free owners to keep such a thread alive. I'm curious why you think it must mean that the great majority of Gravity owners aren't having any problems.

Because I have not posted in that thread, even though I have had very few problems.

And, if there is anything I have learned from posting in this thread---including in a warning from a moderator---it's that all users' personal experiences are entitled to validation. So, because my personal experience is that I haven't bothered to post in that thread, I am correct about it.

Instead, they have been very troubled and somewhat exhausted by the high volume of Gravity service calls
Lucid is my neighbor. I live literally 2 miles from them here in Newark.

I've heard the same from their mobile service, especially with everything related to door operation. Key fobs, door handles. I just called the guy again because now my front passenger door doesn't open from the inside anymore.

And I hate that personally for you and people like you who'd get this but don't bc of experiences you read here. I can't blame you or the people who post them bc their experiences are real. Just as real as those of us who have had minor problems and just love our cars. I recommend it all the time now since the last couple of software updates bc that resolved the vast majority of issues for me and many others. I hope that eventually the people who had problems are able to post up with future updates that they are now having good experiences as well and people will come back around.

From the moment I was told about Lucid in 2016 I became intrigued. The Air prototype broke so many automotive molds at once, and the credentials of the engineering team were so impressive, that I began following everything I could find about the company. When reservations opened, I was near the head of the line for a Dream Edition. When the first pre-production Air hit the new Lucid showroom in Miami I was there for opening day, and seeing and sitting in that display car simply blew me away.

As soon as the Lucid stock moved out of the SPAC phase, I invested enthusiastically and continued to do so for some time – not because I didn’t know it was risky but because I wanted to support Lucid’s stated mission and the technology behind it.

In the decade since the first prototype was revealed I have followed the company assiduously and supported it by buying its products . . . a total of five Lucids, three of which are currently sitting in our garage: an Air Dream Edition Performance and two Gravity Dream Editions.

So where is my head today about this company?

Well, I have written off my stock investment. I’m not angry about that, as I’m a big boy and understood the risk.

And I have reveled in the fun and comfort of driving Lucids on those days when they are mostly functioning as intended.

But the Gravities have finally broken me. They have the power, handling, style, room, comfort, and structural solidity that is – or should be – the hallmark of the brand. But they also have the more regrettable hallmark of woefully troublesome software.

The software improvements that eventually came to the Air and brought it up to acceptable standards of everyday reliability have sadly eluded the Gravity, and they don’t appear to be anywhere on the horizon.

We’re going to keep the three Lucids we have for a while yet, mostly because I have put close to $20,000 into each car for radar detection systems and PPF protection. And I will keep posting of our experiences with driving and servicing them as they unfold.

Beyond that, though, the exhaustion of dealing with unrelenting Gravity software glitches – even reaching to opening up the cars and starting a drive – has finally worn me down.

We will not be buying another Lucid product in our household as the Gravities have proved to be too erratic and unreliable for everyday transportation needs, and I'm not one for collecting Garage Queens.

It may soon be a moot point. If Lucid rolls out the Cosmos to the mass market with anything like the software problems of the Gravity, the company won’t be around to sell anything, anyway.
I agree with you. I daily drove a Gravity loaner for ~10 days while my first Air was being serviced for the last time before I returned it for lease-end, and I reached the same conclusion when considering my next options. The Gravity just wasn’t ready for showtime yet. I decided to lease another Air instead of the Gravity, even though I’d love to have a 7-seater for road trips when my parents or siblings join my family of 4, rather than driving two cars.
I’ll likely reconsider it once my current lease is up, my thought process is that by then, the Gravity’s software will finally be at the level the Air is currently at, after years of bug fixes and reaching a stable version reliable enough for daily use. It’s unfortunate that the same cycle of incomplete software iterations is happening again. They were given excuses for the Air being their first car, but for a company not to learn from its previous mistakes is no longer excusable, and that echoes your sentiments exactly.

I hope that eventually the people who had problems are able to post up with future updates that they are now having good experiences as well and people will come back around.
Me too! I've said many times that I'd love to come back here and say that it all worked out at the end. But Lucid keeps proving me right by not even responding. Emad Dlala has not texted me yet

@hmp10 Totally understand. It’s a darn shame. As you said, the Gravity should be amazing. And it is…most of the time. But every day brings gs some weird bug.

I took some time off from the forum to see if it was coloring my experience too much. I’ve realized I am actually MORE frustrated when not here because all of the bugs I have (frozen screen, hvac screen having
Missing icons sometimes, handles sometimes not presenting, squeaky seats, key not present, etc) still sneak up but without folks like you in the forum, I lack perspective.

Look, I’ve said it before. It’s not the bugs that upset me. It’s the fact they’re consistently inconsistent, come and go and the software seems to degrade after updates.

Love my car still. Not looking forward to a 1,000 road trip this weekend with squeaky seats and a driver door handle not always presenting ….

squeaky seats and a driver door handle not always presenting ….
The loaner Gravity I had had a squeaky freaking charging tray for the phone. If you pressed it, it would squeak. Drove me nuts!

They offered to ship me another Gravity loaner, I said no thanks I’ll just go to Enterprise. Got me a Bronco Sport and it sucks lol

My loaner Gravity, without DHP and comfort+convinience package somehow has a less squeaky/rattling interior than mine (which has all of those options) and drives simply better. Same wheels even, but earlier build (9/25 vs 11/25 for mine)

It’s probably been updated and serviced 🤷

Good to see you back!... issues aside

I know the feeling, it's a car you love (or want to) but you don't get to enjoy because of the issues

Welcome back - you were missed!

We're back in a window where the unlocking/locking issues with our newer Gravity have receded, as they do periodically.

Emad Dlala had earlier asked for current videos of the behavior when the audio pauses in both cars when any two of our Lucids are on the road at the same time. After watching them, he replied that he and his team were "at a loss" with the behavior. But yesterday he sent a message saying they had managed to duplicate the issue at their end, and he wanted me to run an experiment that involved switching sources in one car, skipping forward several songs, and then switching back to the original source. He said they saw the pausing by doing that and wanted to see if we saw the same. We did.

However, he added that, although he had been sending me a lot of questions about this, he was asking fewer questions about our other issues, as they have now identified a root cause for many of them and that resolution should be coming with the next two updates in late May and July.

From his mouth to God's ear.

When all of this is done, Lucid will have to rename the Arizona factory to "The hmp10 AMP" in your honor, nobody has done more for them than you have.
