Rawlinson Reveals Why Tesla Charge Ports are on Left Rear

Damn, idiotic that all our infrastructure is handicapped by this. Rawlinson needs to not bend the knee; and stop thinking about being no. 2. Better tech and range will beat infrastructure anytime.

DC charging infrastructure should be a last resort, with range we can eliminate the load on the grid and resort to home solar, and other renewable energy or nuclear (my preference).

Wish he would have said thanks but no thanks to the Tesla network. Having an asset in the balance sheet like a charging network ran by lucid would be exciting to the Saudi gov’t I’m sure. Would have been an easy pitch.

The Saudis would've had to double their investment in Lucid to make a worthwhile charging network. It's a big ask without big returns.

Don’t think in terms of decades tho with Saudi investment fund; they are looking to secure a nations money independence after oil…

I've always felt the proper position is in the front, not the rear. And since I've had so many German cars, the passenger side, not the driver's.

But I get why they moved it for Gravity.

That is one dumb ass rationale for Tesla putting the charge port where they did.
Even stupider since Rawlinson is relating the story… and then making his cars perform the same way.

Only in the US to avoid blocking 2 stalls when using the SC network. In the rest of the world the port will remain at the front.

It still pisses me off that all of the non-Tesla automakers didn’t have the collective guts to tell Tesla and Ellon to stuff it.

When Ford and GM sold their soul and announced they were going NACS to sell more EV's and push their stock price up ( which didn't happen ), other manufacturers had no option but to follow. If you joined much later, it would be years before Elmo gave you access, back of the queue meant you will be left behind. Manufacturers panicked and one oafter another they caved in.

But, you should blame the other charger manufacturers - they are always broken and not fixed for months and each site usually has 4 chargers. If you go to any Tesla supercharger, 99% work and you have 10+ stalls. Tesla supercharger is the best for charging.

Combination of factors.

Now, they are all betrothen to Elmo.

So Europe and US have different charging. Great job by our auto industry...and Elmo blames the Gov for everything! His charger position explains how his thinking is irrational.

With the port at the front, they will only get 50 kW from a 400V charger. I am glad we don't have that limit.

And native NACS is a huge plus for me, making it more likely I will buy a Gravity instead of a R1.

I greatly appreciate having access to the SC network. It is 100x better than the alternative (based on my personal experience).

Our auto industry (minus upstarts like Tesla, Lucid and Rivian) has consistently been a horrendously backward looking bunch of companies...

Haha - as a Tesla driver I wish that they would have, so none of them could use superchargers.
I get it. I was a Tesla driver once too and hated when I heard they were opening up the Supercharger network. That said, I would not go back to Tesla now if you gave me a brand new one for free and NOT for political reasons. There are just much better EV's out there that are more fun to drive and the companies that make them are intent on continuing to push the envelope rather than trying to become an AI conglomerate with robo taxis and robots to diffuse their energy.

Can’t stand Elon and agree there are a lot of good options out there now, but I do love my Model S Plaid.

You seem to be confused as to who had/has the the best charging network in the US. Undoubtedly Ford & GM looked at the sorry state of CCS1 charging and came to a logical conclusion.

I’m not at all confused. I don’t like monopolies and wish a strong group of other automakers would have fielded a serious competitor to Tesla’s near monopoly on a vital piece of infrastructure.
