BTW both Porsche and Mercedes are moving away from HERE and to an app store model, with native Google maps. Both of their parent companies, among other European automakers, are part owners of HERE.

I was gonna mention that and I believe it is the way to go, giving owners the app flexibility and options they want without having to devote a lot of internal resources to maintain lots of native apps.

That is simply untrue. They pivoted to Google Maps for the navigation part but are still using HERE for the ADAS \ Autonomous part. Lucid may do the same in the near future given that they're dipped their feet into the Google pond with the places API. I suspect part of the reluctance is that it's not free.

The Google places data doesn't stop the routing decisions of the HERE API from being stupid . It's get you to the right address (in theory ), but it's going to take you there in the stupidest possible way.

HERE in eastern Canada is terrible. Yes I know "It's get you to the right address (in theory)" but in practical it doesn't even have the freakin name and/or address, the system is more lost than I am. With Google at least the addresses are there with the appropriate business name and zooming out the suggested route to confirm it make sense and going straight, when I see funny hook, are easy to do knowing it will "recalculate"... Will it ?

HERE works just fine. I use it as my primary navigation. I keep Waze running in the background for other reasons.

All the map systems do something screwy once in a while. I’ve been running two navigation apps at the same time since getting my Gravity, just for comparison. Google/Apple/Waze + Gravity.

Waze does the best job during rush hour finding alternate routes. Google and Apple tend to stick to major routes that are sub-optimal. HERE is closer to Waze than Google, but the time estimates are off.

I believe Waze & Google incorporate historical traffic patterns (traffic will get better/worse during your drive), while Gravity/HERE uses instantaneous live traffic data only, without the historical prediction. The only time I’ll prefer Waze routing is if I know the Gravity’s route will get much worse due to rush-hour traffic by the time I get to a segment. Sometimes not even then if I’m not in a rush - I know the Gravity’s routing will get the job done “good enough.” Gravity/HERE will reroute if live conditions change, such as a crash.

Hopefully, Gravity/HERE will incorporate traffic prediction at some point in the future.

As for searching, Google search will be added to HERE maps, which will be nice!

Good to know! I think that explains the unusual routing decisions it makes sometimes as they are based on live data only.
