Lucid Reveals New Cosmos Images, Says Sportier Gravity Coming Soon
it’s sharing more about future products coming soon. During an earnings call, CEO Silvio Napoli shared new images of the upcoming Cosmos, a smaller electric SUV, and confirmed that a “sportier” version of the Gravity will be revealed later this month at Monterey Car Week.

There's always been the promise of a Lucid Gravity Sapphire, so this isn't surprising.... although I hope that it's sufficiently differentiated (in terms of price and performance) that we DE owners don't feel shortchanged. The distinction between the Air Dream Performance and the Air Sapphire is pretty solid; I don't know how you do the same for the Gravity since nobody is specifically looking for a "track SUV". We'll see, I'm sure!

The date slip on Cosmos is disappointing, but it's a launch that they absolutely must get right. Volume deliveries out of the gate, no software bugs, no hardware rework, no service calls. (How you make that work in KSA, I have no idea.) In the meantime, they need to keep working to establish Air and Gravity as "halo" cars and build a reputation as these being category-leaders so there's no hesitation for people considering a Cosmos purchase day 1.
 
The Cosmos is the car size I really prefer. If production is expected to begin 2H-2027, then it looks like late next year or early 2028 is my likely timeline for that car. That aligns with a short-term holdover...
 
A Gravity Sapphire does not make much sense. Extremely small market and no one is going to be tracking their SUV. Air Sapphire made sense as a halo car and statement piece to show Lucid’s engineering prowess. Doing similar with Gravity adds nothing. An off-road centric Gravity makes a lot more sense. If done right, it could add significantly more sales to the Gravity platform and take on chief rival Rivian.
 
Key advantage with delaying release of Cosmos is that it can then be released with the upcoming NVIDIA point-to-point, hands free ADAS (similar to Tesla FSD). We all know that the Model Y is the main target for Cosmos. I doesn’t matter how much better range, better ride, nicer interior, etc. that the Cosmos might have compared to Model Y, people will say “but does it have FSD?” Lucid can then say “why yes it does and it is slated to have Level 4 ADAS before Tesla will.”

Maybe. But the Sapphire is built to order and doesn't exacerbate the company's cash burn problems. They've got a lot of current inventory that they aren't moving. I suspect the Sapphire is also a lot closer to a profitable sale given it's price point.

Part of the problem facing the company is they haven't been able to predict demand. And in response to that they're pulling back on production. They've also said they're going to scale back configurability. Would customers buy an off-road Gravity? Maybe. But putting one into production could make the cash problem worse if the demand isn't there.

It is possible that Lucid may offer a build to order off-road spec. But I don't think they're in a position to take the R1S head-on. That shipped probably sailed in the initial design phase of the Gravity.

Basically, at this point, all Lucid cars are build to order. I love the Sapphire. But even at $250K they may not make a profit on these cars because of the tiny volume. They need the special paint and parts ready to go. They have to certify the Sapphire trim which may involved crash testing (I'm not sure but probably they have had to intentionally destroy a few). How many Sapphire sell per year? 50? 100? Probably that's high. With this in mind, makeing a Sapphire Gravity does not make sense to me (although I would love to see it or drive it).

Building a Sapphire Gravity is much more than slapping on some bigger motors and sticky tires. The Air Sapphire took extensive engineering time for chassis modification, body modifications, software performance modifications, etc. All this for something that will sell 20-30 per year? Makes more sense to devote that engineering/manufacturing time to a product like off-road that would sell in the 500+ per year.

When I eventually get one I will make my own sporty gravity too ,my design like the blue or red one ,I just posted a pic off.

They made the gravity X conceptt and it looks like not a lot of people emailed them or gave feed back on it.Not everyone cares about going off roading to have fun, just like not everyone love to go to the track and have fun.

They can certainly just add some all-terrain tire option and flared fenders for a package at way cheaper cost to solve this problem or the 'looks' issue. Total waste of energy for re-engineering the platform to get an extra 3 inches of ground clearance that R1 has, plus lower ratio gears for rock crawling and all the underbody stuff. Very few actually take a 100K SUV serious off-roading, the Gravity already can do the rest of soft roading. They already have all the development done on Sapphire motors, CC brakes and things they can use. The Gravity has the Sapphires 1000hz Traction control already too....

The Quad motor R1 barely keeps up with a 50K 4Runner off road anyways, and that car is going to be worth 3x what a luxury EV is in 10 years....I find it strange people keep saying Rivian and Lucid are chief competitors because they are not because then you are trying to take irrelevant sales numbers from each other instead of the hybrid and gas market...
 
People just complain about everything to complain. Enjoy life! If Lucid doesn't copy Tesla, people get upset (Lucid is Lucid, not Tesla). If they do their own thing, people get upset. And if they come out with something new or different people complain. If you like Tesla technology, go buy a Tesla...I don't understand the self-driving phenomenon. Why buy a car if you don't like to drive to enjoy the outdoor driving. That's what make choices great you get what you want you don't have too be a me too kid or person.🤣😂
