RESOLVED lucid's windshield sunshade

Thanks @Rajac, an interesting design for sure. I ordered the Covercraft as soon as @PureVA gave their feedback 👍

I ordered the Lucid sunshade using rewards points. Very disappointed in it.
  • Having similar issues with fit (very, very tight)
  • Also noticed how hot it gets . . . and because it's heavy it retains a lot of heat (still feels warm 15 minutes later)
  • Assume they are using chipboard (solid cardboard) - as the panels sag noticeably after sitting in the heat. So, because of the sag, the heat being reflected off the surface is several inches (6"?) away from the glass allowing heat to build up in the airspace between the shade and the windshield
I had a similar one (probably made by Covercraft) for a 90's Mercedes 500e - it worked well because the windshield was probably 40% smaller and way more upright/vertical.

I tried using chat with Lucid CS but they were not responding (looking to return it or get points credited back). Maybe I'll try calling them tomorrow.

I also thought I might be able to try "re-engineering" it - i.e. removing stitching at the top, removing cardboard panels, replacing with foam core or some other like sized, but more rigid material, and after I'm convinced it works better - resewing the stitching. Foam core would also provide a bit more insulation keeping the heat directed towards the windshield. I dunno. A lot of work for something that was not the best engineered piece of kit.

I got tired of all the fuss and started laying it on top of the windshield. You can pretty much get away with that during the summer in Seattle.

People may consider stealing it, but I think they are deterred when they find out it weighs four hundred pounds.

3rd time was the charm. It's a snug fit for sure. I had to move to the the passenger seat to get the right bottom corner of the shade into the bottom right corner of the passenger side of the windshield first, then everything else fell into place.

I'll try it again from the driver's seat, but I think because it's a snug fit, it needs to be seated well into the bottom corners so that the top of the shades don't stick out too high to impede movement of the visors.

I'm glad it's working well. Definitely the nicest sun shades I've ever handled. Excellent materials & build quality.
Oh wow. I thought it was more along the lines of that silvery reflective material. I didn't know if was like that. 😮

For what it’s worth, the sunshade seems to have a break-in period of a few uses. It goes up quite easily now. Takes maybe 5 seconds to unfold and slide into place, much better than fumbling with the Heatshield I had before.

I've had the sunshade for a year, and I absolutely agree there's a break in period, for me it was a few weeks and it got really easy to insert and remove after this.

Additionally, regarding the gap around the cut out for the sensor suite, I recently found out that angling the visor inferiorly dramatically closes the gap and minimizes deflection of the solar rays/heat into the cabin.

See attached pics.

Overall, this is the best sunshade I've owned, but there's a learning curve for sure.
