Lucid to Use Nvidia Alpamayo

That’s really exciting. I’ve been worried Lucid wouldn’t have the expertise or finances to build this sort of thing on their own

No, just means they're using Nvidia's

JLR has been in partnership with Nvidia since like 2000, but they haven't really released any advanced ADAS out of that yet (rumored to be using some area dealer cars for R&D). I've always assumed they will ship the newer ADAS stuff they've been working on with the BEV Jaguar and Range Rover first.

10B is smaller than I thought it would be, although it does make sense with how much RAM/VRAM (most likely shared RAM in the Air) I'd assume the car has. I wonder if there are plans to make a 32B+ model, maybe even 80B+ models that dedicated robotaxis or other future cars with beefier hardware could use? I would assume that this lets the model think through more complex scenarios and use the data provided to it (every sensor, camera, etc) better.

I'm also a bit confused about the decision to incorporate COT, given the fast reaction times needed for any autonomous driving system. Hopefully, it is "dynamic COT" as seen with some of Google and Qwen's text-based models, and it therefore isn't slowed down by thinking when it needs to react quickly, but thinks about things like a car 0.3 miles ahead on a highway.

I do wonder if I could incorporate this on my FTC robot for an autonomous driving demo! Would certainly be interesting to work with it, and of course it is on Hugging Face for me to use. Just gotta hook a beefy EGPU up with something like a Raspberry Pi, I suppose.
 
what happened to Nuro Gravity demo of self driving car? I dint find anything about this yet. Is it supposed to be shown today in CES?

Nvidia has said they'll be partnering with an undisclosed company on development of a "robotaxi", so I wonder if they'll ultimately decide to partner with Lucid. Not really sure what else they can announce in relation to Lucid that they haven't already.

At the end around 8:55: The partner appears to be Mercedes, in which the system is available now. Coming is Jaguar, Lucid, Land Rover, and Stallantis.

This is more exciting to me than the Nuro partnership. It works with current sensors rather than requiring the roof mounted sensor pod, which none of us will have. Interestingly, nVidia’s system doesn’t use lidar nor require HD maps (1:05).
 
That may be the most instructive video of self driving that I’ve ever seen. Congrats to Nvidia and it’s looking good for Lucid.
 
This could be a major problem for Tesla. Tesla has put all of its eggs in the FSD basket. The only reason to buy a Model X or S is for FSD. I remember reading a lot of the comments on early reviews of the Gravity and Tesla fan boys would comment “What, no FSD, not interested”. The rest of those cars are crap when compared to competition. If future Lucid midsize has FSD capability and is a more luxurious, quieter, comfortable vehicle, it will be very competitive even if a little costlier than Y or 3. Not to mention future Mercedes and other cars coming with this system.

It makes sense to pay for Nvidia to do the heavy lifting on this. Yes, Nvidia is not going to catch and pass Tesla soon but I think we are going to see a lot of interesting advancements on the autonomy front over the next 5 years.

It will be interesting to see what this does to the entire market. If FSD is a commodity that everyone has and our cars all use CarPlay so infotainment is also commodified, how do you pick a car? What features motivate a purchase if you literally aren’t having to drive.

Lucid going after premium feel with sports car edge is an interesting niche. Rivian focusing on outdoor driving is an interesting niche. But it could quickly be a race to the bottom in the big non-specialized car market.

Agree, this will make them very competitive.

Seems like both Gravity and mid-size (upon release) will have a FSD equivalent by EOY given software will be point-to-point with city driving.

It's important to remember that FSD in its current state is nothing more than an L2 system, as it still requires supervision at all times (meaning Tesla has no liability), and that won't change until Tesla starts shipping cars with AI5 chips, which aren't expected until 2027 at the earliest. Even then we won't know how quickly they'll be able to get to L3 or L4.

All this to say that Tesla should definitely be worried.....
