Jiggling the key FOB

I've tried getting an answer to this in various threads without luck, so I thought I'd ask directly here. Occasionally, my Air GT fails to unlock as I approach. When this happens, I jiggle the key FOB in my pocket and the car unlocks immediately. This works 100% of the time. My question is: Why does this work? (FWIW I do not have mobile key set up.)

Because the key is probably asleep to preserve battery and shaking it wakes it up.

If you "wake" your iphone it generally works as well, at least it does for me.

I don't have my PAAK because it interferes with the FOB

That was what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure the FOB had a sleep mode.

With the mobile app, I find it helps to stand by the car rotating the phone back and forth on its horizontal axis while repeatedly saying "God damn it!". Plan on that taking a bit longer if it's raining.

My Model X is usually pretty good...but sometimes it balks. Its fob is often in the same front pocket as my phone and it seems to have problems if the fob is hiding behind the phone. Might be something similar here.

When my fob is a little slow, depressing the door handle manually when I arrive at it also always opens the door.

This seems to usually work with the phone in my pocket as well, though I haven’t tested it as thoroughly.

The battery in your key fob may have a loose connection. I've replaced mine many times now and it is not a very secure connection. Jiggling it may make the connection.
