Gravity Saved My Life Today

So, today I was making my now fairly frequent trip from Prescott, AZ to Redondo Beach, CA. On I-10 East bound in the middle of the CA dessert. I was driving with Drivers Assist on. There wasn’t much traffic today. I had the cruise control set to 75. I came upon 3 semis running in the right lane, fairly close together. As I’m passing them, as I’m directly under the door of the second cab, he starts to swing out to pass the lead truck. He didn’t see me there. If I had to rely upon my peripheral vision, I wouldn’t have seen his move. He would have hit me and shoved me into the center median. The lucid saw him instantly hard swerved me to the left to avoid being hit by the truck. Red flashing dash warning and all, scared me. I guess as the Gravity swerved to the left, the truck driver saw me and swerved back to the right nearly losing control. Since my hands were still on the wheel, I stopped my swerve to the left before I left the road. I am convinced if not for the automatic action by my Gravity, I likely wouldn’t be typing this.

Now, my CFO, wife, was sleeping when this all started. Being jolted awake resulted in screaming and yelling at me. You can all chuckle now.

Thanks for posting this. Obviously glad you are okay! But this is a good reminder that when my Air phantom brakes for no apparent reason, there's a reason that I just don't recognize. I'm not going to go so far as to say I don't think it makes mistakes or that I'm putting full confidence in the system. But stories like this make phantom braking more tolerable. Better to be overzealous with the braking than to risk missing an urgent need to brake.

I think it's the lane biasing feature that senses objects and tries to maintain additional space.

This type of action is not that new for modern ADAS systems. The wife was driving our 2016 Mercedes GLE 63 (sold for our now Gravity) back around 2018 when it performed a similar action to avoid an accident, although in that case it was at slower speeds and was dealing with merging traffic on a feeder road. It totally sold my wife on the value of these modern ADAS systems.

I’m on a photography trip in the California desert. My friend is driving using his Rivian. When I get home, I will check the halo to see if it recorded the event. Yes, ADAS worked! Thank God.

As a counter point, using driver assist technologies have generally made us worse, less engaged (analog) drivers so being "surprised" is more a function of not paying attention than it is advanced driver aids. Not saying these technologies are a bad thing, but as an engaged analog driver I'm thinking, based on experience, that one of those trucks might want to pass the slower lead truck and I should keep an eye on them until clear.

I agree 100% - but, bering analog, we do not have eyes on the side or back of our heads, so these additional safety systems remind us we are just humans, with two eyes. WIthout ADAS, he could have been checking his driver's side mirror, being especially cautious and attentive, but wouldn't have seen the truck's move. He wasn't necessarily being lazy - but, sometimes, technology can do more things at the same time than we can.
