wonder if they updated the manual. if I'm reading this correctly, it now says 600 lbs. for the GT and Touring both

Sorry, but you're confusing tongue weight with vertical capacity.

The tongue weight of your Porsche Macan hitch is simply 10% of its towing capacity (4400 lbs, so 10% is 440lbs).

Tongue weight is applied close to the receiver. The sticker on your Macan hitch will probably look like this:

So if your bike rack's center of gravity is only 7.5" from the receiver's hole, then, yes, you can put 440 lbs on it. However, it's more likely that your center of gravity with two bikes is close to 24". Doing some math:

7.5" * 440lbs = 3300 in-lbs of torque.
Divide by the center of gravity on your bike rack, say, 24":
3300 / 24 = 137.5lbs

NOOOOOOOOOOO. See the comment above from @Smorgasbord (and all the others). Tongue Load DOES NOT equal the load you can put on a bike rack.

If you load up 4-6 bikes on your Gravity you might see them bouncy down the highway in your rearview mirror!

The bike rack + bike weight limit is 110lbs on the Gravity. That is basically enough for 2 bikes (notice how Lucid shows only 2 bikes in their advertising pics?)
For reference my XC90 is 165lbs - a 50% increase.
Basically the Gravity is unusable for 4+ mountain bikes with the factory hitch. Hopefully a 3rd party hitch that mounts to the frame solves this.

A typical 4 bike hanging rack is ~80lbs (Velocirax) and a 6 bike is 98lbs (Velocirax) before you add any bikes to it.

Correct. However a car going down the road with a bike rack is not static. 187.5lb would be fine in the parking lot. But the moment you start driving the bikes bounce up and down (and push backwards (a bit) due to some drag) they induce more load and torque on the hitch

thanks. which manual is that? does it only come with vehicles that have a tow hitch?

now this makes me want to dig deeper into what my Land Rover can actually do. ;)

I have no idea. I just googled Lucid Gravity Tow Hitch and it was the 3rd result:


The hosting site must be some internal Lucid site, because when i go to www.atieva.com it redirects automatically to Lucid.com

Bottom line: it's very disappointing that an SUV like this can only take 2 mountain bikes on the back. Fingers crossed for a 3rd party solution I guess.

It's just a side effect of the type of hitch they used. The Model X (and a few other vehicles) uses the same removable hitch and has the same limitations.
 
FWIW, I overload my current Model X with 1Up aluminum rack and two 70+ lbs eBikes. No problems in 5 years of use, but when the bikes are on the car I only drive fast on roads I know to be smooth. I forget where my two bike center of gravity actually is, but it is closer than 24 inches (maybe more like 19 inches). I wonder how they determine the dynamic load rating for these things - vehicle speeds, quality of road, etc. And there's probably a healthy safety factor in there as well.
 
Does anyone know if there's an exploded-view diagram of the Gravity? If there is, perhaps we could tell if the aftermarket Model X rack would fit (unlikely, but you never know since they use the same removable hitch and share the same original designer).
 
I so wish they came up with a solution that allows more accessory weight. I'm assuming this is the exact same that I have already...;-(

But glad they are giving the option to those who don't yet have it.
