Engineering Explained joining the Lucid Lemon Club

I like his channel, but this one is slightly annoying for two reasons; One is that Lucid is struggling so much, and two, he is exploiting Lucid's pains for his own gain. This sort of video series is extremely damaging to the brand.
Agreed, the brand has been heavily damaged by his popular channel. I’ve enjoyed it over the years, but severe damage has been done. Lucid software team and management should take this as an extreme warning and fire drill. I’m glad to see that management bought the lease back, it was the honorable (and only thing) left to do, to stop the hemorrhaging. My ‘26 Pure has been flawless and updated without issue, before or after. But I’m on edge.

It looks like this discussion really grew legs! I thought I’d take a moment to drop a quick, positive reminder for us all. Life is short, so let’s focus on enjoying these amazing cars for ourselves, our families, and our friends. We have a beautiful three-day weekend ahead of us, and it would be a missed opportunity not to get out there and enjoy the drive. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Agreed. I am going to burn through some charge -- at about 4 mi/kWh in my Lucid Air -- something my Tesla and Rivian in the same garage cannot achieve.

Speaking from experience, park, drive or reverse, when in hold, the car does not move on steep inclines.
When set to roll:

In park rear brakes are on.

In drive facing uphill all four brakes will hold the car for 2-3 seconds after release of the brake pedal.

In reverse facing downhill all four brakes will hold the car for 2-3 seconds after release of the brake pedal.

If you don't use the brakes the car will roll in either direction in either gear until you touch either the accelerator (it will move in direction of selected gear) or the brake (it will stop).

I always run this way. When parking on an incline I will select the gear that opposes the incline. All maneuvering then done only with the accelerator. Pressing the accelerator I go gear direction, releasing it I go opposite direction.

Wasn’t EE guy on an incline?

On mine, engage brake, put in drive, release brake:

If facing uphill, brakes will prevent the car from rolling back (for 2-3 seconds).
If facing downhill car rolls forward as soon as the brake is released.

Reverse just the opposite.

If the road is flat (or very close to flat) no brakes are applied. The only possible issue is if there is very slight slope the car will roll (very slowly).

Now in EE case he does not show the whole sequence. So either the car was on a very slight hill and started rolling when the brake was released or the car was on a steeper hill he took is foot off the brake and after 2-3 seconds the hold brakes released.

I find roll a quite intuitive way to drive, especially convient when parking or back and forth maneuvering. I can see where if you were expecting hold and it was in roll it would be unnerving.

Ha yeah I have no doubt 3.0 is going to be a hot mess. They're going to say some software issues were "expected" because it was a software overhaul. Probably best to hold out for 6+ months on that update.
I think it's reasonable to be in wait-and-see mode on this one. I'd look to see whether they address the complaints people have with Gravity. If they do that, then I'd have much higher confidence that releasing 3.0 for the Air could be a worthwhile upgrade. But if they start rolling out 3.0 to Air while people like @hmp10 are still suffering severe problems with the Gravity software, then I'd do everything possible to avoid upgrading.

His claim about the app's battery usage on his phone? Is that a "thing"? Or is this something most likely linked to faulty vehicle hardware constantly polling the app?

Very much a thing many have experienced on ios. We've found that closing the app when done using it prevents the drain. No definitive answer as to why it's happening, but it definitely is.

Maybe my bar is different, but I am not going to throw a major tizzy fit if my frunk won't close and I actually have to touch it and manually shut it. The real software glitches are the ones that disable the car or won't let you get into in the first place. Fixing these has to be priority one. As he briefly alludes to, the car drives so well that my threshold to tolerate various software glitches is pretty high. Coming from a a 2013 Model S, I have experienced real pain and have better things to do with my time than worry if Carplay is having a bad software day.

And they gave him a Gravity, this guy complains about every small thing, why give him another car? Lucid knows software isn’t 100%

We’re sitting at a Buc-ee’s in central Georgia, over 500 miles from home, waiting for an Uber and a tow truck. Stranded for the second time on a road trip in our older Gravity. And again with the same symptoms of a drive unit failure. I may start my own YouTube channel.

What if it did change and the first instance was at a busy pedestrian crossing? A short second or two glance down to the pilot panel thinking the car had stopped and held could result in rolling into a crosswalk full of people.
Do folks actually put their car in drive before they expect to move, and before they are actually paying attention to their surroundings? Sounds like that is routine for Jason. That is just bad driving in my opinion. I haven't tried, but can we put our cars in drive without the brake applied?

What is so ENRAGING is that his problems are so minor compared to a lot of us stuck currently paying for lawyers and waiting for BBB arbitration, but all HE had to do was nicely ask Lucid and they bought his car back no problem. Its such a tacky double standard.
That's business. You are trying to lemon? What issues?

Why should he care if it is damaging to the brand? Is is true? It is. Then he can talk about it.

I personally know people that were considering buying an Air because of his first review of the car.
This is an opportunity for Jason to show his engineering roots, with pragmatic level headed comparisons to other EVs on the market. Let's see how awesome the rear HVAC controls are on the IONIQ products, Mach-E, Polestar, GM, Rivian, etc. Compare frunk, doors, trunk functionality, CarPlay/Andriod, hold/release function, and all other software aspects.

As far as the software ethos in cars is concerned, I'm intrigued by the advertised approach of upcoming Slate trucks. Stick your own portable device on the dash and call it a day.

I have no problem whatsoever with his videos, opinions, and conclusions. I’m merely pointing out that he makes a living off of amplifying his experiences. It’s up to the viewer to decide how reflective that is of their individual ownership experience. At the end of the day it’s just a car. If it’s everything you’ve wanted and hoped for great. If not you have other options.
Youtube creators are no different than any other commercial media effects these days. Drama sells.
