Cold weather power issue

Note: I don't know for sure if it was the severe cold, as this happened an hour into my drive.

Driving on the highway this weekend the car started bucking lightly and stuttering the power. This continued until I switched driving modes. Then a while later it started again and switching modes did not work. It continued stuttering for 15 min until I arrived home where I had to floor it to get it to go 8 miles an hour up my driveway. I parked and the car was making a very loud sound (attached) until I locked it and it stopped immediately, so I don't think it was the heat/air.

@maggie245 - I had the same thing happen yesterday so checking the forums. I’m near Philadelphia, so it’s been plenty cold here too but haven’t had any issues until yesterday. Did you get a resolution to the problem?

I haven't contacted Lucid about it yet because it never happened again and I wrote it off as being due to the cold. You are the first person to respond saying you experienced it as well.
 
Going to try driving again today. Here is what happened to me in more detail in case it’s helpful to others.

Car was running fine (38 degree weather, clear), in Swift mode with full regen braking selected. I love one pedal driving.
I stopped at a stop sign on way home after an hour of driving and when I accelerated the car stuttered. Not the normal smooth powerful pull. I backed off a bit and it maintained a moderate acceleration. Everything else on car working fine. Stutter in acceleration was still there. Car didn’t physically shudder, it felt as if the power from motor was just missing a few teeth if that’s helpful metaphor.

It continued for next 10 minutes until I got home. I’d describe it as running but mildly hobbled. I tried all 3 driving modes but didn’t help. I suspected the regen may be popping on and off so turned it off. That didn’t solve the power delivery. I still wonder if it’s related to regen programming or mechanicals, with no proof of course, pure intuition. I often experience regen disabled in cold weather along with the occasional “oh, it didn’t engage on that fast curve” stuff I chalk up to owning a car like this.

I’ll report back today on how it runs with a rest under its belt, but no idea why that would or should matter!

Just gave the car a run and it’s totally normal. Regen worked fine though it did give me the “temporarily not available” warning (which is normal). Acceleration smooth and powerful as usual.
Weather is identical today so this thread maybe should be renamed “stuttering power issue” as it may or may not have anything to do with the cold weather. I’ll be a bit wary for a while but hope it was isolated issue. Appreciate @socktucker positing a potential cause. That may come in handy if I experience this again. Have owned the car for a year so should be having a check-up soon and will mention it.

Yeah I would get this looked at ASAP so you don’t wind up stranded somewhere.

I had a stutter during hard acceleration on my Air early on. It was fine during normal acceleration. The front drive unit was replaced to correct the problem. I would suggest having service look at it if you can repeat it. Service can monitor signals from the drive unit under acceleration and see the issue. I suggest trying some really hard acceleration and seeing if it repeats.
 
@Adnillien - I don’t need encouragement to use hard acceleration, but appreciate license to do so as part of a problem solving exercise!:cool:
Good suggestion and information. I have an appointment with service next week at King of Prussia, so I’ll bring this along with other suggestions to the diagnostic sesh.
I was giving it more than usual off the line when the issue occurred so this is another piece of the puzzle perhaps. I’ll update next Thursday.

Update as promised.

Took car this morning to King of Prussia, in capable hands of Dana Helenski and the team there. Got a loaner with no issue, unfortunately not a Gravity but I didn’t really expect that.🙂

Dana’s note:
‘Good afternoon! It has been determined that the coolant pump was not working at full potential and causing the issue with the rear drive. There is a service campaign out for this issue and we are replacing all 4 coolant pumps. Once these are installed, we will retest your vehicle to confirm no further codes return. I will update you tomorrow on progress.”

So @socktucker wins the prize. Thanks to all for assistance, I’m looking forward to having it back soon.
