When I got home from errands today the charge port door on our Air would not respond to the button on the Glass Cockpit. Nor would it respond to manual pressure on the bottom of the door. I then opened the frunk to use the manual release, and it would not open the door. After several more attempts, I tried an Air logo reset which returned the mechanism to normal functioning.

I have had occasional worries that the charge port door might one day malfunction, but I always assumed that I could at least use the manual release -- at least if the frunk would open (which has sometimes been an issue). It had never occurred to me that a software burp -- something that is still too frequent on the Air -- could keep the port door locked even with the manual release.

The manual release is for the cable lock, not the door. There's a manual charge port door open method described in the manual, which as I recall is basically "stick your fingernails in there and pull."

Well, ain't that a kick. 😑

Lol
I copied the manual below
TLDR: stick your fingernails in there and pull

Manually Opening the Door

CAUTION: Manually opening the charge port door is only recommended in instances where the vehicle has no power and the 12V batteries cannot be charged.
The charge port door can be manually opened if the vehicle has no power:

  1. Open the driver’s door.
  2. Place your finger at the bottom right corner of the charge port door and gently lift it up.
  3. Continue lifting on the corner until a gap begins to form between the top edge and the fender.
  4. Insert your fingers into the gap once it is there along the top edge and gently pull downward until a hard stop is reached.

Interesting. I wonder if that works if the car has power? Other systems in the car were working when the port door failed to respond.

They probably wouldn't recommend it if it has power, since the mechanism could activate and catch your fingers. I don't know what safeties are there to prevent it from Cybertrucking you.

THIS is beautiful. I love the way they think at Lucid.

No tools required, fingernails it is!
