Hi

I decided today to push the car hard and explore it more. The weather was hot like 107f / 42 degrees so I put the AC on obviously and after 30 mins of driving I start to push the car fast to driving no less than 85 to 100 for about 5 mins or 7 mins

When I got home to charge the car it started to charge to 7kw then suddenly it dropped to 1kw or less

I thought umm I guess the car is too hot so I let it sit for 40 mins then tried again and the same happened
Note that My charger is 7kw wallbox

Is this normal ?

I restarted the charger and plugged the car again now as I am writing this post and crossing my fingers. so far it seems doing fine as normal

My car does this in Phoenix sometimes while charging in the summer. Your car is using 6kW of the 7kW from your Wallbox to cool the battery and AC to DC converter. Just let is go and you will see the charge rate rise and fall several times while the car is charging.

Thanks, I’ve been wondering how much energy it may take for cooling the batteries for summertime charging. I’ve heard that sometimes that cooling system can be a little loud too?

But today my interest is that I’m planning to just use 110V charging at my summer camp, which so far reliably adds about 1 kW per hour. (I don’t drive far when I’m up there, and I could easily let it charge for a couple of days if I wanted to boost the battery to a high level for a trip—or could spend a night at my regular house which isn’t that far away, and pump it up on my L2 )

At that slow L1 rate, will the car feel the need to try to cool the battery when it’s 80F+? Or will it be happy letting the battery charge at that relatively-trickling rate?
