Car and Driver EV of the Year

This confuses me a bit. There are so many individual factors that make it difficult to compare so many varied vehicles: price, size, range, tech, efficiency, storage capacity etc.

I can see the Gravity being compared to the Vistiq or the Escalade IQ even (and hands down winning that category).
But how do you determine if a Gravity is a better vehicle than the Charger Daytona?

I also think they should be taking owner experiences into consideration, a lot of these EVs sound great on paper, but are a mess in the real world. The current Mercedes EQ line comes to mind.

Curious to see what their conclusion will be tomorrow, but I am not too fond of the process.

P.S. Why are pics of either of the Lucids not included in the initial collage of vehicles at the top of the article?
 
I view that award as a meaningless one that’s driven (pun intended) more by sponsors and politics.

Agree you can’t compare a luxury EV to an entry level - that’s why I think C&D has different awards for ICE cars. When there we 4 EVs on the market, one EV award made sense, but there are too many now, across segments…
 
We all know #1 will be the Gravity.
Almost every EV-SUV video I've watched cannot help but reference the Gravity.
Gravity is slowly becoming the EV-SUV benchmark. Similar to what Porsche-911 is for Sports cars and B58 is for 6-cylinder ICEs.

2nd and 3rd will likely be Optiq or EX90.

The updated Porsche Taycan won EV of the Year.

And the "Car & Driver" ranking of mid-size EV SUVs put the Gravity third behind the BMW ix and the Cadillac Vistiq.

Not what I expected, but It did make me wonder if they've been following the "Bugs/Issues" thread on this forum.
 
The Taycan is absolutely gorgeous, and the drivetrain is pretty damn impressive too. But the packaging is pretty bad, the lack of interior space is shocking!

One of my family members has an iX, and I will admit that it drives beautifully and the tech is rock solid (not surprising given BMW's pedigree), but again the packaging is lackluster. To have an SUV of that size, and not have a frunk at all (you can't open the hood at all) is appalling to me.

Really makes you wonder the true reasons behind these awards and their choices...
 
As mentioned above, C&D is beholden to advertisers as much or more as journalism so I can imagine the steady stream of new models, press launches and especially the RS models Porsche represents to the magazine might hold some "sway" in the decision...

But hey, kudos to them for including the Lucid models. I'm looking at you, Edmunds...LOL
 
I loved my Taycan. I just needed something more comfortable and roomy for my daily driver. Gravity may take the award with more time on the road and butts in the seat. So we'll see how it plays out next year. I was kinda surprised it was considered at all with so few out there and so little time with it.
 
Every Porsche EV is just grossly overpriced for what you get. That’s where my issue starts and ends. I won’t even consider them because of that.

That said, I 100% acknowledge that’s subjective and my opinion and the Gravity isn’t cheap.

I really think that launch timing played a key role here. Actual production Gravities have only been available for just over a month. While the early reviews are glowing, I'd certainly be hesitant to give an EV of the Year award to a vehicle that didn't even have a full review published yet. Also, I doubt that C&D's staff are idiots, so they have to be aware of the hiccups some early owners are experiencing. After all, the Nick Twork has had to tweet promises that Lucid is working as fast as they can on fixes.

All that said, the 2025 Taycan also hasn't been fully reviewed yet.
