can you hide the large search/settings box in navigation app?

When using the Navigation app, either in the Right cockpit panel or on the Pilot Panel, the search/settings box takes up SOOOO much real estate on the screen.

Is there a way to recover 40% of the map screen, and hide the search box into a small icon somewhere? Or is it pinned there forever?

Yes in the bottom left of the screen you can tap the search icon and it will toggle off the search window.
