On my Air, the top of the steering wheel rim often blocks the driver monitoring camera, and I keep getting attention warnings even when I’m looking straight ahead.
I’ve been wondering whether a simple 3D printed part could work around it. My idea is two small front-surface mirrors, like a periscope with no tube. One small angled mirror would sit right in front of the camera, and a second one would sit a bit higher, above the rim, bouncing the view of my face back down to the camera. The camera works in infrared, so the mirrors would need to reflect IR well.
There are open questions, like whether the eye tracking would get confused by the changed angle, and whether the car would detect that the camera’s view has been altered. Has anyone tried something like this, or have ideas on how to make it work?
I’ve also thought about a yoke-style wheel. Has anyone had their Air’s wheel converted, or found a shop that does it?
I’m actually in the process of moving on from my Lucid, but I’ve always been curious about this and wanted to hear what people think.
