2025 Air touring efficiency

There are two EPA tests. Both are legal and valid. Tesla/Lucid and most of the American manufacturers use the 5-cycle test, which EPA says is more accurate (lol), and of course is better for marketing.

It’s also more expensive to run than the older 2-cycle test (which the EPA says is less accurate, lol) which is at least partly why the Germans and Koreans (and others) use it, despite it underrating mileage by a significant amount.

Both tests are just estimates, and it’s turtles all the way down.

Yes, it’s stupid af. I’d say the EPA should fix it, but they’d have to exist in any meaningful capacity to do that and not have been slaughtered by the present administration instead. But I digress.
Ok this explains a few things to me. I now have a bmw i7 and it gets more than rated range, and 2.7 mi/kw. My Lucid is around 3.1. Worth mentioning that I take literally zero efforts to try and boost efficiency and I’m sure it’s possible. The BMW seems slightly underrated, and the Lucid slightly over rated. The Lucid is also significantly quicker, idk if that’s the weight or just engineering but it blows the doors off the i7, which is no slouch itself.

Yeah, that’s precisely right, because BMW uses the 2-cycle test (underrating) and Lucid the 5-cycle (overrating unless you drive like the EPA, but technically more accurate? Maybe?).

And yeah, other than the Sapphire, nobody drives like my DE. :)
 
It was around freezing last night. The night before it was in the 30s and it lost around 3-4kwh overnight. I’ve woken up to cold battery notifications for what seems like 5 months. Basically any time it’s below 50 degrees.

Maybe it’s doing some thermal management on the batteries but it seems more extreme than others are seeing anecdotally.

The car sleeps quite quickly too. It’s not like it’s running HVAC and Wi-Fi is off.
We have a BMW i5 that is parked outside any temps close to 32 F or below we loose 5-10% last week it was 27F and lost 10%. Our new gravity is garage kept so haven't experienced an issue there but we have only had it a few days.
 
I think EVs should be required to have two ratings similar to ICE highway/city MPG. I don't think most care all that much about combined ratings because everyone knows EVs are generally very efficient. With range anxiety at the forefront of every buyer's mind, it'd be really nice if they could provide highway range or efficiency.

Totally agree and would require all to use the 2-Cycle EPA test. Would rather have under estimated, achievable range than overestimated in perfect conditions.

There should only be one test anyhow l, as two is confusing to consumers.

The realised efficiency is primarily a function of how the car is driven not its inherent efficiency. On my AT I can get from less than 3 to over 5 miles/kWHr depending on how I drive. The screen shots below are from a recent trip from the Coachella Valley to San Pedro and back on the I10 and I91 - so fairly heavy traffic in part and a big mountain pass to go over. To get these numbers takes a lot of focus, preempting the need to change speed and a bit of drafting. Any idiot can have a heavy right foot and use the brake to slow down as witnessed by the fact that my usual efficiency is less than 4 miles/kWHr. That said, what is YOUR DEFINITION of "a car's "inherent efficiency"? Are you referring to the EPA number?

That information is already available. Fueleconomy.gov provides City / Hwy / Combined ratings for all passenger vehicles, including electric.

Travel from Coachella to San Pedro one-way is about 130 miles. Your post says, "recent trip from the Coachella Valley to San Pedro and back on the I10 and I91", was that a mistake? I cover that route all the time (Phoenix to Rancho Palo Verdes/to Marin County).

Actually, heavy but moderate speed moving traffic probably contribute to a better efficiency than if you are zooming along I-10 at 75+ mph!

Your 3.9 lifetime is pretty great! My AT is performing similarly, about 4.1. I’d say anything around 90% of the rated 4.45 is a clear win for the Touring, given that many do a fair amount of relatively short trips around town, cold weather driving, both of which come in far lower—plus driving at normal highway traffic speeds. (Though I will acknowledge I rarely break 75, which surely helps with the lifetime efficiency)

Like you, once in a while it pops up a little over 5, but those seem to be flukes of particularly simpatico situations. I agree, not worth working hard to get to. And I certainly don’t be begrudge those who like to go 80+ and be happy getting 3-3.5!

My 2023 Lucid Air Touring with 19-inch wheels is going on 25K miles. My driving is about 2/3 local, 1/3 freeway at 73 mph. We have very cold winters. My average efficiency is 3.6 mi/kwh. Recent updates seem to be slightly increasing efficiency, but I can't prove it.
