Software and hardware are very different things. They can license their hardware without giving up on their software.

It's actually the orange blind spot light in the side view mirror that blinks. It is reflecting off the front window, which is why it looks like it's coming from inside the car.

It's something a service tech can do to fix the seat's sense of where it is to allow it to automatically move again. Not sure if your issue would be fixed by a rehoming, but it's worth asking your local service center.
