Munro on 14-50 outlets for EV charging, and other worries

My wife, who only know about mains electrics from hearing me bitch, says the same exact thing. Over and over. Why cheap out to save $75 on a receptacle for a $100k car. Even stranger, some will not bat an eye for speeding $3000 to $6000 for magic goo ceramic coating but whine about $75...

Hardwire your home charging station! Or use a Hubbel / Bryant / Cooper 14-50 receptacle, not Leviton

Incredibly well written and spot on correct. You have learned well grasshopper. Having worked at Hubbell designing receptacles for AV and audio use, I learned that all receptacles start degrading from day one. It's a balance of convenience and careful observation. My designs always started...

Hardwire your home charging station! Or use a Hubbel / Bryant / Cooper 14-50 receptacle, not Leviton

@borski. The real problem is that HD, ebay and Amazon sell lots of parts that any idiot can buy, try to install improperly, watching a Youtube. I am so old I remember when Sawsalls were only sold to the trade. Now, any tom dick or harry can buy one and cut through his gas or power line. Can't...

Hardwire your home charging station! Or use a Hubbel / Bryant / Cooper 14-50 receptacle, not Leviton

I don't really blame Leviton. Scores of people burn down their homes every day in the US, undersized or improper use of extensions, over loading circuits. Denver Fire told me that almost all fires they handle now are electrical, except during Sunday afternoon Bronco games, and grill fires take...

From what I remember, if the surfaces are hot enough, the powder bakes on. I kept a couple halon around when I raced mechanical injection Porsches, powder would destroy the engine. Halon just destroyed the ozone.

Better yet, we could sell them an OFFICAL LUCID FIRE EXTINGUSHER made for electrical fires. (a choice of carbon dioxide or powder - in colors to match their Lucids) I can buy them from Kidde or Grainger, put the Lucid name on them, and double the price. Isn't that how it works? (I still have...

Munro on 14-50 outlets for EV charging, and other worries

@DeaneG , for the first time in recorded history, I have to disagree. As a lawyer and electrical engineer, the fact that you tell people they should check the receptacle yearly for a dangerous defect means there is an inherent problem you want to catch before a fire breaks out. What if the...

Hardwire your home charging station! Or use a Hubbel / Bryant / Cooper 14-50 receptacle, not Leviton

Notice on the cheap receptacle the cheap ass screws. Flat blade. They CANNOT be properly torqued. Sorry @Bunnylebowski, you Qmerit electrician was dead wrong. And I use the word dead on purpose.

Hardwire your home charging station! Or use a Hubbel / Bryant / Cooper 14-50 receptacle, not Leviton

Strongly disagree. Want to move the charger around? Just have junction boxes wired in appropriate locations. If you have a properly wired j box, a electrician can hardwire move the charger from one side to the other in minutes. Your insistence on convenience can be accomplished without the...

Hardwire your home charging station! Or use a Hubbel / Bryant / Cooper 14-50 receptacle, not Leviton

I had dinner with two other nationaly known electrical engineers. Siemens. Emerson. One consults for Tesla. They were astounded that people on our forum debate using receptacles and especially the cheap HD grade. Tesla as company policy implores users to only hardwire. And Tesla does not...

Hi @DreamTour I am sorta off point from your question. One point first, its not specifically the Pirelli 21's on our cars are damage prone, its that all extreme performance 35 ratio tires are prone to damaging easily, especially for heavy ass cars, like ours. Many year had the same issues on...
