Unveiling the Tesla Roadster - 10-15-26 Livestream starts at 5:45 pm PST

Musk quotes regarding the Roadster:

“safety is not the main goal”

"if safety is your number one goal, do not buy the Roadster"

"[Tesla will] aspire not to kill anyone in this car".

And then there was this nugget from "TechCrunch":

“Every usable void in the car is packed with Carbon Fiber Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs),” Tesla wrote in a post on X, referring to the type of pressure vessel that has been at the root of multiple SpaceX rocket explosions [my emphasis].

And all with 300 miles of range.

So, yeah . . . .

They should share the test failure blooper reel for this one. Would be hilarious
It's on X. They shared a development video. I don't know if they technically shared any fails as they dropped a car and it exploded (maybe that was on purpose)

The difference is that this would be just using normal compressed air and unlike in a rocket, mass is less of an issue so you can make them more robust

I tried some reverse engineering of it, the carbon fiber tanks are existing aerospace tech, the compressors pumping them up are realistic pressures...Car is still likely going to need a step change in battery tech to get any range and lower weight to drive around without the rocket propulsion... The McMutry Spierling is quite a smaller car with a 1000 kg weight and 60 kwhr HV pack.

300 miles is the 2 seat variant and the rocket car has only one seat

I'd much rather have an Air Sapphire. It's a practical car that can actually be driven down the road, while still delivering more performance than I'll probably evem learn to properly handle. And I predict it'll turn out to be much more affordable to purchase.
Imagine the warranty, insurance on the roadster, it will also will be very heavy, extremely unreliable. Just another cybertruck like pet project. At least Musk can afford to throw money away.

I work with a lot of pressure vessels. At 350 bar, COPVs rupturing in a car would disintegrate you at a mere 1/4th of the energy of a titan sub implosion. Even without COPVs though, hypercars are death traps in most crash scenarios.

I have to say, I wasn’t the least bit surprised to see this thread light up like a Christmas tree on Christmas morning with negative comments. Do some of you genuinely have nothing better to do than throw shade at anything automotive that doesn’t have a Lucid badge on it?

It’s fascinating watching grown adults become so emotionally invested in a corporation that they feel compelled to ridicule anything a competitor does. The Roadster was just revealed, and somehow people here have already determined that it’ll be unreliable, overpriced, and a failure. Impressive! You can appreciate Lucid’s engineering without rooting for every other manufacturer to fail. In fact, competition is a good thing for all of us as consumers.

I’ve never understood this tribal mentality. These companies don’t know you exist, yet some people defend them as though they’re family members. You bought a car, not an allegiance. It’s perfectly reasonable to criticize Tesla’s track record or question its promises. But there’s a difference between legitimate skepticism and seemingly taking pleasure in the possibility of another company’s failure.

Personally, I want Tesla, Lucid, Rivian, and every other manufacturer to succeed and push the industry forward. Why wouldn’t you?

I don't think anyone is rooting for Tesla to fail in these comments. I have always been interested in the roadster assuming the specs align (or were close) with what they announced almost 10 years ago. While the engineering of making it fly was incredible to see, their "reveal" didn't reveal anything aside from their new design language and off-road-only features (not even track-only unless you rent the track for yourself). Sorry that doesn't get me excited as a car guy?

When I saw the clip my first thought was whether my hot wheels track with the loop d loop was still somewhere in my basement….

This demo had the same vibe and same utility. Solves quite a real problem of roadsters being unable to complete a loop d loop because the track didn’t start far enough up the stairs… wait that was my hot wheels dilemma.

. . . they feel compelled to ridicule anything a competitor does.

I don't generally feel that way about other automotive companies. But a company owned by Elon Musk is a special case in my book.

Say what you will about Tesla, Von Holtzhausen and Moravy are at their heart, auto designers and engineers. Yes the vehicle is probably impractical, but just the introduction of the technology, the freedom to engineer. There is no other company like it. Now if only EM would go and $@#& all the way off.

If you've actually read through the forum, you'd see that many of us have a deep appreciation for other manufacturers - including ICE cars. We are hoping for EVs to prosper, despite the uphill climb of the current negative sentiment introduced by...well let's not get political. This livestream did nothing to further that, IMHO. Personally, I was looking for an update on the original roadster - a two seater with dare I say it, Sapphire like specs. What was presented was nothing of the sort. We don't have to be fan boys or haters to predict that something won't sell. Saying the Cybertruck is terrible isn't wishing death on Tesla. Looking at the sales, it's just reality. Now saying Musk is terrible and will be the death of Tesla - that is a debatable point 😏
