Phantom Braking in Reverse

Lately it seems like every time I back into a charging spot, the car thinks there's an obstruction in the way (when there isn't) and slams on the brakes. Really annoying. And I can't find a way to turn it off permanently. I assume it's the rear pedestrian auto-brake, which turns back on every drive? Ugh.

Anyone else having the same problem?

Yep. Happens often time when I am backing into my garage. It seems to happen less frequently prior to 3.6.4 update.
 
I have an Air, so this may not be relevent, but I find the auto-braking in reverse is very speed dependent. My car does not like me to reverse out of the garage at anything faster than a crawl.
 
I get this from time to time in my driveway. It sees a line or a spot on the ground and thinks it's something I'm going to crash into. Best to slow down more and the brake is less likely to trigger. They really need to work on this one a bit more.
 
Yes, it's awful. I find that if I hover on the brakes then the nanny system will not engage - i.e apply enough pedal pressure that the circuit engages but not enough that any braking force is applied.
 
I had to turn off rear parking protection it annoyed me so much. I just use the cameras and try to be careful. Better than a stiff neck.

You have to turn that off manually each time, right?

Wish I could turn it off permanently. I get the reason why they don't allow that. And if it worked well that might be ok. Backing out of a driveway across a sidewalk makes sense. But we have to back this thing into charging station stalls frequently. Annoying to dig into the menus every time for that. Would help if they'd at least make it a joker button option.

It does seem worse after recent updates.
 
My loaner and my previous Air I would get intervention out of my garage if I tried to back out too quickly, anything faster than creep speed and it's a bit intrusive. But you can 'deactivate' it and set it to the intervention 'late' then I get it maybe once every 3 weeks if I am not paying close enough attention.

Same for the Gravity. I got around it by backing up very slowly as well.

I just looked again. I do have REAR PARKING PROTECTION turned off. Either it's ignoring that setting now, or maybe it's REAR PEDESTRIAN COLLISION PROTECTION going off? That's the one that can't be turned off permanently.

I can't imagine parking much slower than I do now when backing in. I creep in pretty slowly.

I use CREEP instead of HOLD though. Wonder if that might make a difference?
 
I experience the "phantom" braking daily while reversing into my garage. I used to see the message whenever the braking event occurred - now I no longer see the message. However it is still active and I hear the chime. I no longer see the popup message with the disable button in the Pilot Panel like I used to before 3.6.4.

Out of an abundance of caution, I am leaving rear pedestrian collision protection on as I occasionally street park near an elementary school. However, the vehicle does not make any information available to me whether it is this or the rear parking protection that is causing the braking event. There are also instances where the vehicle will stop harder than usual as I back into a spot, braking sharply without any audible chime or visual indicator.

I am assuming there are elements of camera vision-based detections that are causing this unexpected behavior, particularly in high contrast areas (particularly around thresholds and shadows). If this is the case, I do wish the various protections could leverage the ultrasonic sensors only, and not have any vision-based detections which seem to have high false positives.
 
For reasons unknown to me the incidents of phantom braking has increased in the past couple months. To me it looks like it’s more sensitive to shadows that are perceived as solid objects. Oddly I’ve also had a higher frequency of “sensors unavailable” for no obvious reason-rain, snow etc. Checked settings and everything is as it was. Would say both have increased since the last update. Maybe changed sensitivity levels?

Yeah there are so many options available that it is sometimes hard to know which setting controls which behavior.

I didn't think to make sure my driver profile was loading too. Sometimes it doesn't, which could mean it was in the guest profile and that setting many not be off there.

I don't think that was the case though, as a couple of other things are different too when that happens, like the seats moving. Everything else seemed fine so I think it was on my profile. Just something else to consider.

Of course, it wouldn't matter if it were detecting objects correctly, which apparently it's not. Turning it off is just a bypass, not a fix.
