Connected Home Charger - Speed Decreasing on 100A Circuit

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some insight or advice from anyone who has run into a similar issue with their Lucid Connected Home Charging Station (LCHS).

The Setup:

  • Vehicle: Lucid Gravity
  • Charger: LCHS J1772 (Model ending in -02)
  • Purchase Date: Acquired back around July/August 2024, but just had it installed this past weekend.
  • Installation: Professional install by a trusted electrician on a dedicated 100A circuit.
The Issue:

  • When I plug in, the session starts strong at full speed (~19kW / 80A).
  • After about 15–20 minutes, the rate drops down to 11kW (48A).
  • No error codes, no weird blinking lights, and no app warnings—it just quietly throttles down power.
Current Status with Lucid Support:I reached out to Lucid Customer Care, but the rep I spoke with mentioned they hadn't heard of this specific recurring issue yet and didn't seem familiar with potential thermal throttling on the -02 model revision.

Questions for the Community:

  1. Has anyone else with the -02 revision experienced this 19kW-to-11kW drop without any error lights?
  2. For those who successfully received an RMA / replacement unit (like a -03 revision), how did you navigate the process with Customer Care? Did you need to ask for a specific tier of tech support or remote log pull?

Appreciate any tips or guidance on how to best navigate getting this resolved through support!
 
I ended up having to run out to Home Depot to get a new lug for the L2 cable

I'm also having the same derate issue but I'm using a Ford Charge Station Pro (80A). I have an LCHC but haven't installed it yet (don't have the correct lugs) and not sure which version it is. Not sure I should even install it if it's an older version after reading this thread.

I think my electrician used an overly thick cable at 2/0 gauge instead of 2 gauge, so I needed a lug that was bigger than what you might need. It was a direct replacement of the damaged looking one already installed, and it is this one:


They make a 1/0 version, as well as smaller ones, if that would work with your wires. But since this goes all the way down to 14 gauge, it’s a safe bet.

This is what it looks like installed (this is pre-replacement):

The two problems with those connectors are: they are not what Lucid recommends (so can be a cause for a failedinspection) and they are prone to improper installation (not setting torque on the wires). I'm not an electrian so this is not advise but properly selected and installed they shouldn't cause any problems.
 
I do see the manual mentions compression lugs, not mechanical lugs. This is what my electrician selected, so I didn’t question it. It was permitted by the city and was passed during the inspection. My understanding (as a non-electrician) is that compression lugs are more important in environments that are prone to vibration or when connecting wires with many, many strands. I think the 2/0 wire is not classified as having many strands, and there is no vibration on the wall, so I think this should be of no issue. My garage in South Florida does get quite hot, but I wouldn’t think enough to cause an issue with mechanical lugs. The charger does get warm during a charging session, but it seems like a normal amount for something that is flowing 80A continuously.

Lucid will not cover this under warranty, fwiw. The non-ground lugs need to be compression lugs. Your electrician messed up, and needs to come back and replace them.
 
Lucid charger here, 100A feed and have never had an issue until just recently; the car starts at 80A 17-18kW, and then after a minute or so it throttles down to 12kW. I tried powering down disconnecting and reconnecting, ambient temp is 83F with sunshine on the car and charger.

I have 3 Lucid NACS chargers at home and one Lucid NACS charger and one Tesla charger (Gen-1) at my vacation home. All of those chargers behave the same way as you have described on my Gravity. I haven’t had a chance to test it out on the lucid Lucid Air, but will do so next time I take a long trip back and forth to the vacation home.

One issue I have with the Gravity is that once it’s charged, it will wake up every minute or so and report that charging stopped and charging finished or just that charging finished and then go back to sleep. On the Lucid Air, it occasionally does that when woken up by somebody approaching the car or when I look at it with the app, but it doesn’t do it on its own all the time. This is really annoying because the charger powers up, the relays click, and the charger powers down. I wind up unplugging the car when this happens because I hate to get all those messages and cycle the charger. This, by the way, only happens with the Lucid charger. The Tesla charger, which is set at 72 amps, doesn’t do that.

But both the Tesla and the Lucid charger connected to the Gravity, show that the Current Limiter on the app varying and running from low current available to high current available. Don’t know if the car is causing that to happen or the charger is varying the pilot signal for the charge. I have a screenshot video of that, but it’s a hassle to upload it here since I can never get the file to finish uploading.

Interesting 🤔, my electrician initially wanted to use the same lugs as yours, but I insisted to use the copper compression lugs that Lucid manual states. I remember now, he didn't want to go compression lugs because he didn't have the tool at that time. I insisted, so he asked his friend to borrow the tool. When he came back couple of hours later, I can see why. That tool looked like a huge gun and it was heavy ..

Wasn't there some guy on here that had their unit melted down using the wrong lugs?

This is something that has recently occurred to my car and office charger, I'm going to call Lucid service at Goose Island tomorrow to see if they have any insight on this.
 
I plugged into the Lucid charger when I got to work yesterday, and voilà it charged at 80A all the way to 80%. The charger is mounted to the west side of the building so the car was in the shade for most of the charging, we have some some hot sunny days coming and I will see if it's the ambient temp and sunshine affecting the charging rate.

I had the same problem of rate dropping with LCHS -02 version on 100amp circuit after software release last year. I called Customer Care to report problem and mobile tech came out and verified issue—I was unable to pull logs. Lucid shipped me -03 version which I installed. Problem fixed.
 
I installed a newer NACS LCHC on an 100A breaker and it worked fine but it does slow down rather quickly but seems to stay at 11kW up to 80% on my Gravity.
I had a most recent J1772 LCHC unit installed at a second home and it was set to 80 amps on a 100A breaker and it would start and stop but not successfully charge. What a member of the Charging team told me this month was that it was a known issue and that if I altered the dip switches to set at 72A inside the LCHC it should work and it surprisingly worked perfectly.
NOW TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT: He said that an update is being tested for the LCHC that should fix this ant that it should be released at the end of June or early July. This update will be OTA and the charger will flash orange when it is occurring. The person that I was speaking to seemed very knowledgeable and was very responsive and helpful. WE WILL SEE. He also claimes that the LCHC are all equally up-gradable and there is no need for a unit swap unless the unit has a hardware malfunction. The LCHC does have logs internally that can be found by logging into the charger.. http or for me -- https://192.168.5.1, this worked. my model number is P11-Y25901-03. Hope this is helpful

I think we have determined that this drop is due mostly to the car. I get the drop on a Tesla charger too. Aside from the current drop, I have other issues on the Gravity, such as it trying to constantly charge, when it doesn’t need to:

I believe the culprit for the charging complete messages is due to scheduled charging. These messages come out during the 6 hour window that scheduled charging is active and the charge level has been reached.

This doesn’t happen on the Lucid Air. I only get one message at the start of scheduled charging window.
