While I agree with you on something like what BMW almost did by wanting to charge subscription for heated seats, developing and maintaining FSD is phenomenally expensive. We all understand that the high cost for Dream Drive Pro is not just what it cost for the lidar and other extra sensors. It is helping to pay for the development and maintenance of current and future ADAS. At least with the subscription model, you get what you pay for as opposed to what Lucid did for early DDP adopters with the Air who paid $10,000 for promised features that took forever to come and still have not gotten to the level most people felt was promised or hinted at. I paid a high initial cost for the currently disappointing HUD on my Gravity and might have preferred to have a subscription model. Charge me $10 per month for the basic current functionality and then when the Augmented Reality that has been promised finally shows up, up the monthly to $20.
I have a feeling that self driving ADAS on the upcoming Cosmos will probably be subscription based. Maybe a free year or two at purchase and then subscription. Ford, GM, Tesla and Rivian are already doing this, so seems to be the trend.
