I have mine positioned directly in the cutout - haven't had a complaint or, more importantly, a ticket with that setup. It is powered directly from car under roof fascia, by a professional.

If you really need a radar detector, I wouldn't risk not using the cutout - YMMV.

Do you get constant laser alerts? My V1G1 is unusable due to the laser alerts.

Turn laser alerts off, outside of a jammer they are useless in any detector. You find out as you are getting the ticket.

It’s narrow beam, you aren’t alerted to your neighbor getting hit.

I got Uniden R9W installed, 27 hours of very expensive labor later…

Excuse my ignorance, but when most law enforcement used Ka, K, and X band RADAR these detectors seemed way more useful, but now that most agencies (at least here in Calif) now use LIDAR aren't you already confirmed on record exceeding the prima facia speed limit by the time your detector alerts you? If so, I'm not seeing the benefit of the spend on a high end system (unless you're talking jammers like an ALP). Plus if you get caught using a jammer isn't the fine way more than a few speeding tickets?

Please educate me

Uniden R9W is a laser jammer and detector, my last unit was ALP.

Laser jammers aren’t illegal everywhere, they certainly not legal in Virginia or DC. CA you would need to check, in NY/NJ I am fine.

There is no admission at all involved in having a radar detector and/or laser jammer. The idea of a radar detector is that you slow down based on early detection, and the reading the cop gets on your car is therefore at/under the speed limit. The idea of a laser jammer (where not prohibited by law) is that again you slow down based on the detection and jamming, and the jamming turns off after x secs/mins so by the time the cop gets a reading it is at/under the speed limit. And of course the only valid answer when a cop comes up to your car and asks if you know how fast you were going is "I am happy to cooperate, but I am going to use my constitutional right to not answer that question".
 
No, I get it for the RADAR Detector because RADAR fans out and the alert on the detector can give you that slow down time...but with LIDAR they already have your speed recorded by the time your detector alerts; there is no time to slow down. They got you.

A jammer in use comes back to the cop as "no reading" and so that gets their suspicion up so when you get pulled over they look for you system and in Calif it's a $50,000 fine and poss jail time.

I'd rather just pay a speeding ticket or two and the resulting increased insurance premium

Of course only use jammers where they are legal. Like here in WA. IMHO they should be legal everywhere but oh well.

Two things re: jammers:
1) having one is not illegal; using one is.
2) in California, possessing 1 to 3 laser jammer units is treated as a standard traffic infraction. Four or more separate jamming devices or heads escalates to a misdemeanor (aka more severe legal penalties and a criminal record)

The $50k and up to 5 years in prison apply to radar jammers under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) federal laws, not California laser jammers. This applies in every state, period. It is a very, very, very bad no-good idea to jam radar, anywhere.

Sorry I should have been clear where "jammers" = "laser jammers" in my comments above. I have never had radar jammers.
