DDPro inconsistent. Dangerous?

I recently had an issue where I was in the middle lane of three on an interstate, hands free. There was a 100 ft or so of fresh tar without lines. When the car got to that blank section, it veered violently towards the right lane, and I had to wrestle it back into my lane. Really shook me up, as I was in fairly heavy traffic.
No car has completely safe autonomous driving. That’s why I don’t use it, don’t trust it.

Just drive! Why people need to use hands free I just don’t get. It’s not ready yet. Not even in a Tesla, unless you want to get in an accident!

Never heard of the flashers creating a log entry. Does that happen with Gravity?

I did try the flasher button and the screen doesn't indicate anything like it does when using the horn, but might still be recording.

Dunno! :)

It's good you learned this early on before you became lulled into a state of complacency. In heavy traffic, failures like this, however rare or not, can easily cause an accident. In my Air, the sensors needed recalibration and Drive Assist was not working. Unfortunately, this was not communicated in any way to me, except that the car did not maintain its lane. At first, I thought it was an isolated incident since I don't use DA often because it makes me more anxious to use it, especially in good old southern California traffic. But after repeated failures to maintain the lane, a trip to the SC for recalibration fixed the issue. I mentioned to the service tech that the car really should have warned me that DA wasn't operational - he agreeded and perhaps something will come of this, perhaps not. 😀

There are some rural limited access roads that have both traffic signals and, yes, stop signs. But point taken.
The Saw Mill River parkway in NY has even traffic lights that creep up to you unexpectedly

Had DD Pro on my 2023 AGT and since hands free was activated I used it generally without near miss surprises, although the take control now red warning would appear randomly despite the fact that I always drive with my hands on the wheel at 3 and 9. What surprises me is that Lucid terms the feature "hands free." It is not a completely hands free feature in my experience. I have said this before but until there is a FSD six sigma system I will keep my hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. I have little doubt that Lucid will incrementally improve DD Pro.

Once. Had a pie at flying pie, since they have a massive 475lb ball of tinfoil. When I visited she was but a lean 455lb. One day Flora will beat the world record (which is like 1600lbs or something).

Here, have a photo, and a blast from the past of my former startup’s mascot :)

Flora is beautiful...

Turning on the hazards doesn't record a video. The point is just that it creates a log entry, so when you later ask service to look at some issue they have a reference point to look at what else was going on in the diagnostic logs around that time. My guess is honking would do just as well, but hazards are what Lucid has told us.

I am slowly coming to the conclusion that HFDA isn't something I care to use. If there is any traffic on the road, I just find it easier to drive the car myself. It feels a bit like being in the car with a student driver. You have to keep an eye on everything anyway, so you might as well be driving yourself.

DDPro helps with defensive driving. I find that I’m paying more attention to traffic patterns and what other cars are doing around me with Dream Drive enabled. Mental bandwidth that goes into lane centering and speed control is freed up for higher level driving concerns.

I had a definite dangerous DDP handsfree fail this morning. Driving east into morning sun on freeway on section with stripes that are starting to fade. I drive this section regularly 3-4 times a week and in morning sun, DDP will have car start hunting left to right trying to read stripes. It stays in lane but you can tell the system is having an issue reading the lane stripes but never give you the “Handsfree has stopped, please take control” message. This morning at that section while in DDP handsfree, the car started doing a little of the hunting as before but then suddenly started drifting significantly left, just as a pickup was coming up on my left. Got within a foot of the pickup before I realized that DDP had failed and took control quickly to pull car back into lane. Never got a “Handsfree has stopped” message or any other warnings and have the distinct feeling that car would have hit the pickup if I had not taken control.

My key message here. DDP handsfree is great 99% of the time but when it fails, it can fail horribly and dangerously without warning. Pay attention and be prepared to take over.

My experience has been extremely solid but do I trust it? No. Just like I don't trust it in any other branded vehicle I've owned that's had some form of autonomous driving. They're call assistant systems for a reason and need to be monitored at all times for the reasons you outline above. To be completely honest, I'm actually surprised at how well it manages itself in LA traffic.

It could be the system wigging out or could be an issue with the sections of road you were on. If you've got the date\time etc. to provide to Lucid you should send a summary of what happened to [email protected].
Try a Tesla FSD

Try a Tesla FSD
Meaning what?
Setup side by side comparison or borrow someone’s Tesla for a couple of weeks?
Test drives only tell you if the vehicle totally sucks or if you can live with it
IMHO

Lol. Head over to the Tesla/FSD forum on reddit and search "system error" or "system failure". Read through the posts - it may alter your opinion.

My GGT did this again this morning in the same spot and also tried to drive me into pickup coming up on left side. My concern here is not that the system will sometimes have a hard time reading the lines but it should never prioritize following hard to read lines over driving me into another vehicle. In both cases the car did not drift left but rather purposely steered left (heading towards car on left). If the car is having a hard time reading lines, it should resort to “Keep away from cars on left and right” or more quickly dump the handsfree mode and warn me to take over sooner. In both cases, it appeared as if the Lucid did not see the car on left.

This morning while driving on this same section of I-10, I made a point of closely paying attention to what the car did and displayed on dash when it got to this spot where it usually tries to kill me. Even though the lines are somewhat faint and morning sun glare might cause issues with reading them, the dash clearly shows the lines accurately in relation to me. With handsfree DDP engaged (auto lane change is not engaged), the car will purposely steer left, over the line towards the left lane. The dash at this time clearly shows the car straddling the lines. So this is definitely not a case of the cameras having a hard time reading lines. For some reason the system is ignoring that info and purposely steering the car left (and sometimes into adjacent cars as I have pointed out above). For me, DDP Handsfree is not ready for prime time and I will be keeping at least one hand on wheel.

For me, not only is DDP2 no where near FSD, it is not near Blue Cruise or Super Cruise. Yes, I know many of you have raved about how good “your” DDP2 handsfree is, but don’t stop paying attention. Sooner or later, there is a good chance that the system will try to kill you.

There’s actually a good chance any system will put you out there, no matter whose box it is.
Not excusing anyone as there are no off the shelf mix and match systems that are standard.

for me it seems better than the old HW3 Tesla Autopilot that i was used to, never paid for FSD. DDPRo2 for the Gravity seems fairly solid, but i did have to intervene on a sharp turn in a rural highway area because it didn't seem like it was going to slow down. But mostly it's been ok.
