I've joined the club - Stopped at red light, rear ended in Napa

On Friday 6/26/2026 I was driving mid-day from Marin County to Napa in my Air. There was a Gravity driving "with" me and we kept swapping positions based on traffic. If you're on this forum, it was nice driving with you.

I was enjoying my car, the music was good, and I was stopped at a light just thinking about the weekend. After about 1-2 mins, a 2014 GMC truck hit me from behind. Apparently neither the driver nor her passenger happened to notice the traffic signal that had been red for 1-2 minutes. My insurance company USAA, hers is AAA. Police wrote a report documenting her admission of fault. There was no evidence of alcohol wine use, which is amazing since yes it was in Napa.

I woudl say impact was 10-15 MPH. Back bumper, trunk, maybe the back window were impacted. It is drivable, sensors work, camera works, but they said there can be lots of hidden issues once they do the teardown.

Now the fun begins. I took it to the only Lucid approved body shop in Marin County, Barsotti's, and was impressed with their knowledge and service. They told me that Lucid parts are out weeks, sometimes months, and they have had a Gravity sitting there waiting for months to get parts, which Lucid always says are going to ship "next week." They don't yet know if it is totaled but it's borderline based on what they find once they tear it down.

I'm relieved we have GAP coverage in our leases, and am now figuring out if is totaled, do I lease another Lucid (likely much more expensive now that the Federal rebate is gone) or do I jump ship and go to another brand. I'm not sure what to hope for - it's lose/lose. If they repair it, I'm driving an Enterprise rental for 2-3 months minimum she said.

I welcome any suggestions as I begin this process. I will definitely go through USAA and let them subrogate back to AAA. I know that part. But do I push for a total or push not for a total... and any other things I should be thinking of?

First accident in a long while.... haven't caused one since I was 16... wish people would put their phones down while driving...

PS I also spoke with Lucid's new bodyshop in Millbrae but "lucid" and "new" struck fear in my heart. If they could have given me a Lucid loaner, I would have done it, but too much risk and not enough reward to be a Beta tester on the new body shop I think. Part of me wonders though if they can get parts faster...
 
Sorry for your bad luck. Don't forget CA has a new rebate coming online soon, which may factor into your decision.
 
Doesn’t the new rebate only apply to first time EV buyers?

And very sorry about the accident, OP. That really sucks. I don’t have any advice, but will stay tuned for community guidance.
 
That's really crummy. If it wasn't alcohol then I'm sure it must have been mobile device distraction.

Thank goodness for the gap coverage. If you liked the vehicle why not get another one?
 
Sorry to hear of your bad luck. Make sure your body parts are ok too. Sometimes a low speed impact can do harm. Having said that let's hope that you're ok. That's all that really matters In the big picture. And no, I'm not a lawyer.

Why does Lucid take so long to ship parts, it’s not like they can’t make enough cars to satisfy demand. Another issue that Napoli needs to fix. Listening Mr. Napoli? Hope he he gets this message!
 
I started shopping online for cars... BMW, Audi, Mercedes... and none of them have the exterior and interior beauty of the Air. I had said "if it's totalled, no more Lucid, the software sucks" but then.... I started looking what's out there and there's nothing like it. Come on Lucid, get it together, fix the damn software so I can buy another one haha. Thanks all for your concern. I still wave at every Lucid I see on the road, just like in the first days of Tesla. That Gravity that passed me before the accident has no idea what happened moments later... and it could have easily been him as he was one lane over. I'll let you all know what happens. Next step - is it totaled? Then.... if not, how long will parts take.... months they say... months....

FWIW, Millbrae is where the other body shops train (and this has been true since the beginning).
 
That's interesting @borski ... I had a pretty bad service experience there (nice guys, overwhelmed) so I'm worried about getting sucked into the chaos there. What would you do?

I honestly don’t know. Millbrae is fantastic, but you’re right that they’ve been absolutely slammed for a while. San Jose has helped a lot once it opened; when was your service?

I do know that service centers just got headcount after the latest layoffs, but it takes time to hire, so I don’t know.
 
It was last October, I think before SJ opened. I heard from one of the techs that a bunch were deployed to San Jose for training and startup which worsened Millbrae. I have had amazing experiences with Rocklin and mobile service. I do wonder if internal Lucid will have more luck getting parts....
 
Seeing yet another post about how difficult it is to get parts gives me pause. I remember back when I was debating about my order (early adopter), I was told how they are making sure there would never be a part shortage by purposely setting aside extra parts after every 10th car made. Apparently that was just a line to get more sales it seems. I was hesitant about buying a 'new car' and seeing the horror stories of how long Tesla owners waited on parts. I just didn't want to deal with the same thing. I'm starting to wonder if Lucid had good intentions but then quickly changed their minds about part inventory and the added expense behind it. It's almost as if they wait until they have 'x' extra sitting around that isn't needed to build another vehicle and that's not a good for existing owners!
 
I'll update this thread with my progress to help the unfortunate souls that go after me. I do hear that the Lucid parts situation has improved but we will see. I'm hoping there's a.... uh... happy ending here.

I am surprised they actually stopped and didn't do a hit and run away like a lot, sad but true here in Northern CA. Hope you solve your problem. Although farther for you, what about Roseville, CA? I deal with them when my Air needs TLC. They have a body shop that does their bidding. I had them paint my right rear door when I first picked up the car due to a very tiny chip in the paint and they did an awesome job and gave me a loaner for 5 days. That was back in August 2024.
 
I got hit by someone that ran a red light in early 2024. Ended up without my Air for 5 months. Lucid was slow to respond to the body shop throughout the process and was also slow to send parts. Super frustrating experience.
 
Our handyman needs an alternator for his 2022 Ram hybrid vehicle. There is a 2-3 month wait and they quoted the repair at $11000. This supply problem is everywhere. Scary really.
 
Over six months for a single part for my neighbor's Hyundai. He had several Enterprise loaners to cover that time.
