Question about the dashcam functionality

I'm curious if there is a specific technical reason why parking mode video recording from the exterior cameras can't be triggered by motion detection near the vehicle - similar to Tesla's Sentry Mode - rather than only activating upon impact.

One of the most critical reasons to have this feature is protection against vandalism and people carelessly dinging doors in parking lots. Unfortunately, Lucid currently lacks this kind of proactive monitoring mode.
 
All of the Halo Secure stuff is still beta and missing a lot of functionality they said it would eventually have.
 
Thanks for the reply. I initially thought there might be some hardware limitations, like a lack of dedicated motion sensors or something similar. But as I understand it, the system is actually buffer-recording continuously into a circular buffer even when the car is asleep - otherwise, it wouldn't be able to capture the 30 seconds of footage prior to the impact. If that's the case, a physical motion sensor isn't even necessary.

It makes me wonder, though, how they would handle side illumination in dark conditions if they ever implement this.

No, other than presumably higher priorities.

Sentry mode is a major battery suck. It is probably not as easy as Lucid thought.

Sentry mode, when properly implemented, is not a significant battery drain. By definition, when you have more "activities" around your car, the detection/recording will require power, hence the battery drain. But just sitting in the garage, the battery drain is minimal.

Have you had a Tesla? I think they have been refining Sentey for like 10 years to get it where it is now, and IIRC it’s still about 4%/day off the big battery. I cannot think of any other BEV automaker doing Sentey right now.

That was what my Model Y used.
I guess to be a little more accurate and to translate to Lucid-world, it is (75kWh)(0.04)% or 3kWh/day assuming Lucid software engineers get about the same efficiency as Tesla people did.

It is a massive battery drain, no matter which car you pick. Even on Teslas, it's like 4-5%/day.

Well, there will be some battery drain for sure. But 4-5%, which equates to 5-6kWh, is massive.

I can see that if you are recording at 4k and park your car at the entrance of the Westfield Valley Mall.

My Rivian has it. I have not paid attention to the actual power drain, but I am sure it is not 5-6kWh. Else, I would have noticed. Similarly, my (2k) dashcams on my AGT have not registered any significant power consumption that drew my attention. Perhaps I will meter it and get an accurate reading.

The problem is not the camera and motion sensing power consumption. It’s the fact the car needs to keep the high-voltage system live to prevent killing the 12V battery. DC-to-DC conversion is inefficient.

Fair point....therefore, are you saying, there is no simple way to do this (parked surveillance system) without rearchitecting the power supply topology of the existing cars?

It’s not really rearchitecting, but the software has to optimize the best way to monitor 12V battery burn-down so it minimizes the times it powers up the high-voltage to recharge. Or invent a much more efficient way to do the HV to LV DC conversion.

It is about 4% of a 75kWh Tesla battery, which is 3kWh, not 5-6. Measured by my experience. Assume about 6 cameras monitoring (not the full Lucid suite).

I am not saying it can’t be done. I am saying battery drain is likely one major reason Lucid hasn’t done it yet. My guess is that keeping battery consumption low or manageable has been a major concern for it.

That, and the main computer needs to be fully fired up doing real-time video processing to detect motion. Think Ring on steroids.
 
DC-DC conversion is very efficient (97-99%) and isn't the issue. The power drain is from keeping a CPU and ancillary systems powered up and processing several video feeds.

3kWh per day is only 125 watts average consumption.
 
Image analysis is computationally expensive. The car computer can't sleep, it has to record all the cameras and perform frame analysis on all of them all the time. I'd guess that costs at least 100-200 watts.
