Been trying to test out all charging options with Tesla.

Went to a V3 supercharger, plug connector in, charges for like 2 seconds, then stopped. Screen says require an extra step, I’m not sure what that extra step is. I thought everything is plug and charge. Will ping my SA tomorrow and see.

Testing @ home. Tesla gen 2 wall charger. 100amp circuit. Wall charger charges my 3 other Teslas fine. Charges the Porsche Taycan fine with J1777 adaptor. Plug into Gravity, no clicks, charge cable does not lock (just like when @ v3 Supercharger). Starts flashing red LEDs, screen says problem charging, try replacing. Tesla wall charger flashing red LED. Unplug (again, not locked). Few seconds later, Tesla wall charger goes to GREEN status. Decided to just plug in my Tesla EVSE, I have an 14-50 outlet coming out of the same circuit (for occasions just like this, pad in the back for thinking ahead). Plug into Gravity, I hear cable lock, then starts charging. Get about 9-10kW out of the EVSE, I usually get 11kW out of the wall charger, but that’s fine.

Anybody have any insight? I also have a new universal wall charger, I was thinking of installing it (got it free from Porsche), but don’t want to waste time if it’s the same. New wallchargers have app connection, which might offer more insight into any errors. Or just stick with the EVSE since it works.

For the V3 Supercharger, did you set up a payment method for your Lucid charging plan?

I have no idea why your Tesla home charger will not work.

I'm not sure if the Lucid Gravity supports some type of plug and charge on Tesla SCs. For my wife's EQS580 I need to go into the Tesla app, select the hamburger menu (I have other Teslas as well) and scroll down and select 'Charge Your Other EV'. Once that is done you select the dispenser you are connecting to.

I do this after added the Mercedes to my Tesla account again by selecting the hamburger menu and selecting charging, select vehicle details, hit the '+' and add the information for you vehicle.

Apologies if this is duplicative but I thought better to try and help.

I did not try actually paying through the Tesla app. Because they were selling the plug and charge as the main NACS setup, I was just assuming it's working that way. But it's a good idea. Going to try that today.

Already have payment method in the system. My cc shows up in the wallet in the Lucid app.

Yeah, I remember Kyle Conner on Out of Spec making the same error when picking up a new Rivian that had Plug and Charge with Tesla. Stopped at his first Tesla SC on his way home and ran into similar issue. Realized that he had not set up a credit card with his account.

Hopefully it’s a non-issue when setup. Enjoy the new ride Gravity. Thinking of ordering one but I need a car in a bit less than 6 months and I think there’s quite a waiting list for these.

Depending on how you spec it, very possible you could get it in that time frame. Ordered mine in April, getting it delivered this week.

I'm not at all certain I'm right about this, but I think a Tesla gen 2 wall charger was designed before NACS and SAE J3400? As such, it might not be compatible with vehicles with NACS charging ports. My impression is that NACS adopted the plug geometry from Tesla, but there were some signalling changes. I've never taken a deep dive into this, but maybe someone who knows more that I do can chime in.

Interesting. I have a Gen2 Tesla wall charger as well (installed in early 2019). Thought I'd be able to repurpose it. If your theory proves true, I guess I'll be making the swap to a Lucid NACS setup.

But I'm using an old EVSE from my 2016 or maybe 2017 models. So it's old, and before NACS ratification. And they work fine. It's just the wall charger not working. I'm trying to avoid calling Lucid, which no doubt will be saying it's the Tesla charger.

Guess I’ll just have to try it for myself whenever my GDE is delivered. I’m in week 7 of “In Production” status, so hoping for movement soon.

You should just call them. You’re an early adopter and I’m sure they tested these things so should have some insight. It could help identify potential issues for other owners.

I haven't been able to find formal documentation of this, but my strong theory is that the EVSE (Mobile Connector) uses J1772 signalling for L1-2 charging -- I say this because Teslas can charge with a pass-through J1772 connector, so they obviously support the non-digital J1772 signaling standard. This will obviously "just work" with Lucid as well.

My guess is that the Wall Connector supports charge rates beyond J1772 and therefore uses a different protocol to communicate to the vehicle. (Or maybe it's just more picky.)

RESOLVED.

OK, the communication hints got me thinking. Anyway, took out the cover on the wall charger. Changed to Legacy communication mode, no workie.
Lower amperage to 72amps, no workie.
Since it works with the 14-50 EVSE, I figure I might as well lower it to the closest to 50amps, which was 56amps on the wall charger. WORKED!!
since I already have everything apart, and killed the circuit. I moved the communication back to regular (Tesla), and BOOM!! still worked. I also tried every amp setting in between. Only 56amps work. I have a 100amp circuit, and the wall charger max out at 80amps. When I plug into Gravity, it shows max amperage @ 80amps. So there's some communication there. Maybe the new Gen3 Universal will easier to figure out.

So now, Gen2 Tesla Wallcharger, Communication set to Tesla/Standard, and amperage set to 56amps.

It clicks like normal when I plug it into the Gravity, love hearing that click.

Now charging at 13kW, I think I was charging 10kWs on the 14-50 EVSE.

So this got me thinking, I already have the new Universal wall charger sitting in a box. I think I'm going to install this over the weekend. I was just too lazy before to swap out the Gen 2. But now I think I'll just keep both on the wall. You can hook up 2nd wall chargers to the new version. So maybe I'll go that route.

Regardless. For those with Gen2 Tesla wall chargers. This is your solution. Enjoy!!

P.S. - now I'm going to sit on the couch and not move, my back will be killing me tomorrow.

I know Hyundai Ionic with NACs was having the same issues with Tesla home chargers and someone reported you need to change the compatibility of the charger with the charger app (which most people don't even download)

EDIT: I see you figured it out- great!

Just bookmarked for whenever my GDE arrives! Thank you!! 🙏🏼

So those of us with older (non-wifi) Tesla wall connectors shouldn't have an issue?

So those of us with older (non-wifi) Tesla wall connectors shouldn't have an issue?

From my research the opposite
At least as far as Hyundai is concerned it’s the low tech chargers like the one that comes with the car or the older gen 2 wall chargers that you can’t program that won’t charge the nacs hyundai unless you use both a nacs to j177 adapter and then a j177 to nacs

Mine was the Gen2, so it's the older one. I have to go in and change the Amperage via the dial, and communications via the dip switch (which you don't have to, I confirmed it works in Tesla/standard mode).

The newer 3rd Gen and Universal are WiFi capable, so you can do all that without opening it up. I have to shut off breaker, open, change settings, turn on breaker, test. Repeat multiple times for different settings. I see the advantage of the WiFi setup, so I'll try to install the spare Universal Wallcharger either this weekend or next.
