This just happened.

Occured while parked in a parking lot. I didn't notice the damage until I got home. I went back to the parking lot and saw glass near where this part of the car would have been, but no evidence of anything that "hit" the car.

My initial reaction is that this should be a strightforwaard replace since there are no sensors in the rear screen... but after reading a few threads, it seems that the trim around the glass cannot be reused, so, the price just goes up and up and is likely to be $5k. I was going to go out of pocket if it was $3k or less. Hmmm....

Anyone in the South Bay or SF peninsula who has gone through a rear screen replacement recently? I'd like to commiserate.

You didn’t notice all the dead Dinosaurs either?!?! The coming ice age??

Well it was round and I don’t see blood so not someone’s head and probably not a brick. Wrong shape of impact.

And tell me again how long you drove like that before you noticed?

Have no idea how you couldn’t notice that when you walked up to the car, when you got in, when you looked in the rear view mirror - it isn’t exactly subtle. Looks like someone took a sledgehammer to it.

Passenger side, I approached the car from the driver's side. The car was backed into the spotSo, I did not need to use the rear view mirror getting out of the spot.

I drove 10 minutes home, pulled into my garage nose first. THere was no real need to use the rearview mirror, although i'm sure I glanced out it once or twice.

Sh!t happens.

Yes, it does look like a hammer hit it. I wish our cars had a camera view like Gear Gaurd.

How well can you see it from the driver's seat, even when you're looking?

My first thought was a stray golf ball from a nearby driving range, but the diameter of the crater suggests something larger and heavier. Almost certainly spherical. You can practically see the first point of impact where the lines converge to a spot that's maybe a centimeter across. I assume you weren't parked at a sports complex. I'm intrigued by what could've done that.

Sadly I would guess vandalism from a brainless punk. Sorry this happened to you.
