My Life With My Lucid

Me: I walk into the garage. There’s my beautiful car, I think to myself. I always dreamed of driving a car this beautiful. Look at those lines. The front is killer. Yes, it’s a little Buick in the back, but who cares about the back, the rest of it, just wow. Most beautiful car on the road. So glad I got that glass roof. (I beam proudly at my 6 month old car)

Lucid: No reaction to me. You are dead to me, it thinks, though it has been draining my battery constantly on my iPhone for the last 24 hours. When I walked into the garage to do laundry, it locked and unlocked about 15 times, like a bird flapping its wings, ready to fly. The Air is always ready to fly.

Me: I get closer. Get the phone out of my pocket, wave it by the driver door, touch the handle.

Lucid: (Flash of light, doors unlock. Complete silence in the cabin. Somewhere distant a strange pumping sound starts, then a whir, then some other random noise it’s never made before.)

Me: Ah, so glad they fixed that phone key. See, they are making progress. (Closes door and walks to the trunk to open it and put some stuff in.)

Lucid: (Locks EVERYTHING before I can get there.) You should have run, and stop checking your texts.

Me: Back to door, repeat, earlier steps, leave driver door open.

Lucid: You think I’m going to fall for that?

Me: Back to the trunk, close it. Get in car, turning my body the correct way (butt in first so I don’t hit my head). My butt hits the steering wheel and the wheels turn loudly.

Lucid: I know you were listening to Yacht Rock yesterday, but I’m going to greet you with stone silence or perhaps satellite radio which you don’t subscribe to.

Me: This car smells so good. Love this glass roof and the comfy seats. OK, let me remember the 55 steps to get it to switch to Spotify, get to my home screen, hope Yacht Rock is on top. Remembers Tidal, that was a waste of money, I think to myself.

Lucid: Plays some random DJ announcer thing from satellite radio while I try to figure out if I’m in Lucid native music app or over in Carplay.

Me: Wait, Carplay didn’t start? <clicks “Start Carplay” and the wheel spins a while, says it doesn’t connect but then I see the Carplay icons. I make a test call to American Airlines just to see if it’s connected via bluetooth. It’s not. Go to Bluetooth settings and try to reconnect phone. Do hard reset on Lucid to get everything to re-sync, then wonder if I should also hard reboot my phone.

Lucid: Are we ever going to get to go somewhere?

Me: Frustrated sigh, but we are almost there. I have completed the 55 steps and Steely Dan is playing. I put it in drive and start to leave the driveway. That neighbor just looked at my beautiful car. (realizes I left my coffee on top of the car when I was trying to win the trunk race.)

Lucid: STOP!!! You are about to hit that shadow in front of you!!! STOP IMMEDIATELY YOU FOOL!!!!

Me: I know that game. Ignore.

Lucid: Maybe you should make a phone call. Music’s kind of boring. I promise, it will be easy.

Me: Press mic button, call someone, they answer and the Yacht Rock is also playing. That is strange and has never happened before. But I’m cruising at 70 in a 55 zone and this is really a smooth ride, I think to myself. I didn’t make a mistake leaving Tesla, I tell myself, out loud. This car is wayyy better.

Lucid: Gotcha. (evil laugh while I fumble with controls to pause music and continue conversation) Volume of phone call randomly changes.

Me: I use the retro wheel thing to adjust the volume because the steering wheel buttons are just… so much. Finish phone call. Try to find the strange button on the roller thing to disconnect call but end up using the Carplay Apple interface instead on the screen.

Lucid: I’m going to vibrate now to let you know you swerved an inch when you were trying to disconnect your call.

Me: That was sort of fun, and whee, we are going fast. I think that Tesla driver just admired us. Or else they are wondering why I am swerving all over the road.

Lucid: Want to navigate somewhere? I have two options, Carplay and my native app. My native app is easier and works for most things but won’t warn you about police ahead, and if you turn on the voice it is a voice from computers in 2005. Also the navigation will take over all of my screens, so you really don’t need the voice prompts anyway.

Me: Hits the microphone “Take me to Trader Joes” and the route appears on the screen. See this car works great, I think to myself, they are going to push an update that’s going to make this all work, something about a 3.0 coming in the next 3 years, can’t wait. I take a deep breath, continue driving.

Lucid: No routing information available.

Me: What do you mean?? This has never happened in half a year. Notices that LTE bars are greyed out. Ok, this happened on the Tesla, I remember. I pull and hard reboot to fix it. It does not. Air logo reboot. No change. Get out of car and walk way. No change on re-entering the car (as the door unlocks and locks as I approach). I get in.

Lucid: Plays random music from my phone.

Me: I kind of like this song, good choice, Lucid, I’m sure the connectivity will return soon.

Lucid: Evil laughter.

Me: I want to turn on the seat heater. I better not try a voice control. That was sketchy even on the Tesla. Likely it will turn on the wipers or something. (Looks at the screen, thinking that seat heaters would be under the main panel since they are commonly used. They are not. I look at the other panels.) I REALLY SHOULD HAVE SPENT MORE TIME READING THE MANUAL, I think to myself. Wait, I read it and spent hours the first couple of days sitting in the car, what’s wrong with my memory these days. It’s not the UX, it’s me.

Lucid: Want me to turn on the seat air conditioning? (Starts playing a random song from high school that I haven’t listened to in decades.)

Me: Ignores music, I’m at a traffic light, really want that seat heater. Find the control under climate. Of course that’s where it is. Makes sense. (Glances at the 50 icons which seem to control wipers and trunks and frunks, missing the Tesla customized dock, but putting that out of my mind. This is a luxury car, the Tesla was a Honda with a battery.)

Lucid: Want to stop at the Honda dealer?

Me: NO, take me to Trader Joe’s

Lucid: (Robotic voice): Navigating to not Trader Joe’s.

Me: Yacht rock on, at traffic light, fiddling with controls just to try to commit them all to memory.

Lucid: THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN!!! 2 SECONDS AGO!!! GO YOU IDIOT!!!!

Me: I hit it, we are instantly at 60 MPH, and remember why I still love my Lucid.

(the next day the LTE returns. I enter the car in silence and must figure out how to get my playlist going again…)

Brilliant! 👏👏👏👏👏

Thank you for your post, which was enough to nudge me out of lurking here. It was well written and sobering. Brutal. I didn't know whether to react with a laughing or crying emoji. I chose crying.

I am a tough-minded but sensitive creature, with long backgrounds in music making, UI design and motoring.

In my old age now, I would struggle to live with any version of what you illustrated. My approach to solving it would be configuring the car for MVP: if it didn't do 100 things well that it should, at least I could constrain it to do 5 things well that it must.

But I can't count on that being effective, can I? I'm not that naive. And I do use phone reflection when I drive (CarPlay by default, but sometimes Android Auto).

Enthusiasm will get me only so far. In the end, I need the damn thing to work, wherein its characteristic behavioral trait is conforming to the driver's commonsense expectation. Less than that (especially far less) just isn't going to cut it for me.

Back to lurking and, through the lens of others' reports here, trying to learn how Lucid cars can be livable...

Intent was to make light of what many of us go through as we drive this beautiful car. It really is a wheel of fortune when you get in. For me, the latest software update seems to have added a lot of glitches that come and go. Once stayed in a VRBO in France with a washer/dryer that took 9 hours and ended by burning the clothes. Sometimes my Lucid reminds me of that, other times it's the best car I've owned. You just never know what you're going to get. Not my intention to turn this into another software complaint thread. Kind of hoping someone else posts their own "Lucid It's Me, Not You" story....

Our prior Air and new Gravity's various quirks have occasionally been aggravating, but we've really enjoyed the cars overall. We're halfway into a 1000 mile road trip in the Gravity now and are becoming used to traveling with it. It's sooo comfortable and capable.
