Aside: I’m in Corvallis, OR, on this road trip and Drive Assist has worked on every single back road I’ve tried it on; and I’m here literally on farmland. Including lane keeping and steering. I have no idea why, but I’m not complaining.

I've found that (like on our Tesla) that Drive Assist can be enabled pretty much anywhere with adequate road markings. The only place it wasn't available, strangely, was in my mother's gated country club in Boca. These are residential in HERE (same as my home) but are marked as "local access" restricted -- that's the only obvious difference to me.

Does it need markings on both right and left side, or does it work with just a double yellow?

It'll work with even a single yellow or white line. It might take a while to initially activate if that's all there is though.
