Radar Detector Wiretap for Gravity

Looking to see if any one has started to explore wiretap areas in the rear view mirror for a radar detector hardwire. I did this on my Air and found it fairly easy. I attempted a bit this Friday but found it impossible to get the cover to come off and didn't want to break it.
If anyone starts to explore this project please post step by step and I'll do the same as I continue to effort my Uniden r8 hardwire mount.

BTW , Blendmound BR7-2014 for Uniden works great with this mirror.

I tried to use these wires as it was easy to get this piece off , but found it too tight to get the wiretap in

Look for @hmp10's posts about getting a radar detector installed from the summer. IIRC, his installer might have (had to) tap 12v power all the way at the rear of the Gravity. He also mentioned that Lucid was happy to advise the installer, so you might try asking them for advice on where you can tap in.

Wiretap turned out to be an easy job once you got the camera housing off. Key is there is is a big clip in the center in the center of the camera housing that needs to be pryed off from back to front. Jerry from Showtime audio put together a great video as he helped me get this done. Really love the guys at Showtime Audio in Chicago. If you want you a Uniden or even af ull R9W setup give him a shout.

Thanks for sharing this post...the mirror tap looks very doable. Does it turn on and off with the car the same way the plugs and USB can be programmed to do in the menu system?

On a side note, while I love the clean install with the Blendmount as well as the location, unfortunately it's not in the area where the tint cutout is in the windshield which means your detector is NOT going to operate normally with full sensitivity in that location. I tried it in that exact same spot for the first several weeks I had the Gravity...all the directional arrows will be pointing backwards as the front antenna is blocked by the window.

The port we tapped into does indeed power off when the vehicle sleeps.

Regarding placement, While under the mirror might not be theoretically perfect, real-world performance is still excellent. I ran it there for a 320-mile trip across the Indiana Tollway against ISP's Ka-band (34.7 and 33.8 GHz).

Detection range was great, the R8 notifications were popping significantly in advance of Waze. The mounting location didn't interfere with the directional sensors either; the arrows correctly tracked the signal, transitioning from front to rear precisely as I passed the source.

Now I just wish Lucid would get their software engineering shit show in order and get us CarPlay ASAP. I hate having to run Waze looking down at the cupholder. (And get us Phone as a Key while they're at it!)

I hear they may have been different windshields installed…some block everything and some don’t. Mention if you have a cut out right of mirror, if not that’s a tell, of something.

Ah! I just had a brain wave, here’s the best way to hook up the Uniden R8 if you’re not gonna do a professional install. @Cyp this should work for you and the dangling cable will be out of sight for future videos. Having that USB c in the back of the seat is clutch.

How about a USB C power bank stuck to one of the visors…shorter cable, same difference…can charge it off the car while charging…car

Yeah that’s mine, I just used the mount that came with the Uniden R8. I’ve since moved the power cable to the passenger side and plugged it into the back of the passenger seat USB C. You just need to order the longer adapter cable I forget who makes it. I have the sunshades now so the cable is hidden underneath them even better than that old pic above.
